I thought I would post this. I was reminded by a FRiend that today...well today in certain parts of the country, but not quite August 1st where I am...is the anniversary of MTV's launch. I watched MTV a lot as a teen. So much so that my dad had cable removed for a time. Oh was I angry about that. The only thing I could compare it to would be taking away my Free Republic now. :)
I don't consider MTV after a certain point in time as real MTV. They went weird and were not related to music at all...or very little. I'm talking about the original line up of VJs, J.J. Jackson, Nina Blackwood, Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman, and Alan Hunter, and all the wonderful new music that came out in the 80s. That part of my teen years was a great time, from about 1982 to 1985, and I recall it fondly.

Yes, I can remember when they actually showed music videos.

Rap got “equal time” and MTV became crap.

“The Buggles Video Killed the Radio Star was the first music video to air on the new cable television channel”
And the second video played was Pat Benetar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”
I gave up on MTV almost 20 years aqo. I realize that I’m not their target demographic, so it’s probably a good thing. My favorite non-music programs were Beavis and Butthead, Liquid Television, and MTV’s Oddities (especially “The MAXX” - that was just plain awesome).

I still have a t-shirt of the MTV birthday stored in the attic. My early HS years. Later, I quite liked ‘120 Minutes’. Now, I have it blocked on our TV. Ironic, huh?

I remember the MTV launch
and also remember watching "Jukebox" with Britt Ekland, all of which suddenly makes me feel very, very old. The videos themselves were often hilariously bad by today's production standards, but I enjoyed them at the time (and still actually like a lot of the late-70s and '80s music, often despite my disdain for most popular entertainment).
To this day, I get a kick out of seeing Martin Chambers and James Honeyman-Scott holding up their cards reading "SPECIAL" in the "Brass in Pocket" video. Don't really know why.

Nobody mentioned
Celebrity Deathmatch?, the one with Hilary vs. Monica? And I loved the animation, but MTV was better when it was about the music. Even had one of those black T-shirts with the first MTV logo on it, had to send gum wrapper POP's off for it. Everybody wanted it!
