EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday asked for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of stealing early era rifles from the El Monte Historical Museum earlier this week.
According to the El Monte Police Department, surveillance-video images reveal that the man used a crowbar to pry open the rear door of the museum around 10:30 p.m Monday.
Officials said that the man broke several glass displays and removed multiple vintage World War II long rifles from the cases.
Authorities said that the man left the museum with rifles in hand through the same entrance and drove off heading eastbound on Mildred Avenue.
Police describe the man a Hispanic with dark hair and medium build, 25-30 years old, 150-180 pounds and is no taller than 5-foot-9.
He was seen on wearing a blue Dodgers T-shirt that read ‘PUIG 66′ on the back.
The man’s vehicle is described as a white, 2-door Honda Accord with limo-tinted windows and black rims.
Police believe the man still has the rifles and that they will be recovered at the time of his arrest.
Anyone who may have information regarding this crime is urged to contact El Monte police detectives at (626) 580-2154.
With that good a description they should pick him up in about 10 minutes.

California requires firearms to be sold thru dealers, background checks, etc. And as of Jan 2014 long guns must be registered.
This system will surely expose this thief./s

I was a board member of a small museum which had a collection of arms. We had an arms appraiser come in and appraise the collection. We were told to sell about half the arms in the collection because they were too valuable for the type of museum we were and would only invite theft. We sold them.

I wonder if he got anything good, like BARs or M-2 Carbines, or Ma Deuces, or what? Any of those would make the local gangbanging look for real like it does on TV.
The largest gun museum I have ever seen is the J.M.Davis Museum in Claremore, OK. It literally takes all day and there are a lot of historical and rare ones. There is no charge tho they take donations.
Mr Davis had by far the largest private collection in the world. My grandfather took me into the Davis Hotel in downtown Claremore a couple of times when I was a kid. There were rifles and shotguns lining the walls all through the hotel. The lobby had machine guns, mortars, pack guns and cases with things like hangman nooses, hoods and pistols from famous desperadoes.
Davis sold the collection to the state for a dollar provided they build a museum for it.

I know, I am referring to the WW2 M1, not the early Nam era M14 used by the Marine Corps. An original m-14 with the selector switch is worth a whole lot more than 800 bucks.
