Box Office: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Zooms To $94M Weekend

Walt Disney and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy debuted with a powerhouse $94 million opening weekend. That’s the third biggest opening of the year, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95m) and Transformers: Age of Extinction ($100m).

Since opening weekend is of course about marketing, Walt Disney deserves a gold star in that department. From the get-go, their marketing campaign as been a textbook example of how to sell an unknown property to the masses.

Of course, it helps that James Gunn and company delivered a winning final product, and so Disney screened it early and often and let the review embargo drop right before Comic-Con. And now, since the marketing campaign kept quite a few narrative and visual surprises out of the clips and trailers, it may well reap the benefit of audiences discovering their favorite beats in a theater, which is a major driving force for word-of-mouth and repeat viewings.

I remember getting a 1975 Marvel comic (”Astonishing Tales,” I believe), which spotlighted the said “Guardians of the Galaxy.” I liked sci-fi, and I liked the name, so I bought the comic. But I found it pretty wretched. In fact, it became something of a sore point with me, as I considered it the worst comic-book in my collection up to that point.

I never knew the title/group was revived for a later series. Don’t recall any raccoon.

If it is who I think it is, that’s hilarious. But it makes sense.

There’s a cameo by a Marvel character who was exiled from film long ago.

Told the two grandsons to hang on past the credits to see who it was, but they're too young to get the joke. I thought it was funny though... :0)

This film is based on the 2008 GOTG team; it was “rebooted” by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning of Marvel Comics.

Basically, the 2008 team is the second team to operate under the Guardians of the Galaxy moniker.

I'd never gotten into the "Guardians of the Galaxy" comic series, and I'm a huge Marvel fan, so I went in to the movie with no preconceived notions - although I do remember the Kree from the Fantastic Four. I read the plot in Wikipedia beforehand so I could follow the story line.

I took the two grandsons (9 and 14) with me. We all enjoyed it tremendously! I liked Rocket and Groot in particular. It's a great action sci-fi movie, but if you're unfamiliar with the comic, you'll get a bit more out of the movie if you read through the WikiPedia plot beforehand (it gets a bit complex).

NOTE: As some have said in prior posts, Rocket is somewhat foul-mouthed (especially in a scene where he and Drax get drunk), but it's probably not something older grade schoolers haven't heard. And after you learn about what had been done to Rocket, you may sympathize with his 'tude. :-)

Wrong Guardians. But a version of Yondu is in it.

Films that must rely solely on their eye-candy effects for viability seldom are.

Yeah like Star Wars, Iron Man, The Avengers, Transformers, Captain America...................I think if the eye candy effects are well done and integrated well there will always be a laqe segment who want something that is just a fun mindless ride to escape in .

Only people old enough to know 80’s movies got it...parents were explaining to kids why they were laughing as I was walking out.

It was worth a matinee ticket, easily. Probably essential if you intend on seeing all of the Marvel Studios universe releases.

Did anyone catch Stan Lee’s cameo by the way? I laughed uproariously when he popped up!

We truly live in an age of fantasy.

Probably why we have a fantasy President - a competent, capable, intelligent black man who leads America boldly through all of its challenges and only ever fails because white racists hate him and continually undermine his good works. :)

It’s a well made, fun, and funny movie.

Most of the comedy worked, but some of it was pretty low hanging fruit. Also, the villain Ronan the Accuser reminded me too much of Malekith from Thor 2.

Some other problems but I can’t get into it without spoilers.

It’s one of the best marvel movies, which is saying something. Well worth a look!

I first became aware of this group in the early 80’s as I was collecting comic back issues and purchased the Avengers. Korvac saga was great. Starhawk could not see “Michael” in the Queens home. I recall the Avengers & Guardians took a bus. They were all killed.

Color me shocked. Maybe it's entertaining. But I could never plunk down $10 for a space movie with a talking raccoon, even if it is a comedy.

I'll wait until it comes out on Netflix.

I was happily surprised how good it was! (I went to it with low expectations though)
