How my mother's fanatical views tore us apart (daughter of a feminist)
Daliy Mail ^ | 23 May 2008 | Rebecca Walker

Posted on 08/06/2014 9:33:56 PM PDT by Marie

She's revered as a trail-blazing feminist and author Alice Walker touched the lives of a generation of women. A champion of women's rights, she has always argued that motherhood is a form of servitude. But one woman didn't buy in to Alice's beliefs - her daughter, Rebecca, 38.

Here the writer describes what it was like to grow up as the daughter of a cultural icon, and why she feels so blessed to be the sort of woman 64-year-old Alice despises - a mother.

Feminism is a vile perversion of the mind and the natural order. Thank God she escaped her mothers’ clutches. What a hag!

One of the underlying issues all zealots fail to face is there was something lacking in their own personalities which led to their failures to achieve their personal nirvanas.

How sad for her. I’m glad she sees the poison that was her mother. Sounds like her mother is a complete narcissist and may have a screw loose somewhere in her head.

Thank-you for this. The most telling part was that her mother blamed her for things she had no control, like that she was be-racial, had a Jewish father and spent half of her custody time in their warm, conservative, upper middle class home.

Alice Walker tried to prove that she was for sisterhood, but she was really only out for her own selfish promotion as a feminist icon. At least she was not a hypocrite for trashing motherhood. She was competitive and neglectful of her daughter and I hope her grandkids do not idolize or romanticize her in her absence ( or rather abandonment).

I also hated her book and thought she did not deserve the acclaim.

Your mother was self serving and wholly ungrateful for anything in her life.

You were unwanted as well.

Lucky, you weren’t caught in a coat hangar...

Yes, it takes a special kind of nut to blame a child for their father (or mother) doesn’t it, when your are the person who picked them!

I read this when it first came out. I can’t believe how evil Alice Walker really is. Just evil and destructive to her only child. Dreadful.

Why is it that the leaders and visionaries of leftism are so often abherrent and twisted, mistreating those closest to them, even their own children?

Jean-Jacques Rousseau,”father” of leftist philosophy, convinced his common-law wife to surrender each of their 5 children to an orphanage, at a time when orphanages were hell on earth and a likely death sentence, because they would have been an impediment to his obsessional aspirations as a social climber.

Leftists kill and mistreat their own with such scary ease. It’s bizarre...

I tried to explain this story to my husband this morning. His first conclusion was that some people are nutjobs and then they go out and find a cause.

I am so glad that this woman had love enough to overcome her mother’s bad mothering for her child. I was grateful that she also dispelled the terrible myth that women overcome the grief of an abortion and that she is listening her need to have more children. I think that the example of her stepmother with her five children was the model that she needed to become a good mother herself. I hope this happens for her and her husband.
