The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

A chiropractor might be able to help with that neck. And if you run out of muscle relaxers and the doc won’t give you more, skullcap is an herbal muscle relaxer.
Hubby has had the best year ever for tomatoes, peppers, potatoes,cukes, and squash. I think it’s because none were located close to any walnut trees.
LOL! That chocolate idea makes just as much sense... perhaps more!
I’ve just about decided that I’m getting tired of watering the grasshopper food.
The okra are doing well, the sunflowers are finished, the tomatoes are finishing. I actually got a small amaranth harvest today - despite the grasshoppers. They were gracious enough to leave enough of the leaves for it to remain alive all summer, and apparently they didnt want the seeds, so they continued to develop!
The squash produced enough to make me see that it really IS possible to grow them. So I imagine that in a week or two, even though the squash are blossoming, I’ll call it quits. The T-squash developed two babies, but they never grew to maturity. They either shrank or rotted on the vine. I did get 3 white bush scallop squashes which I was thrilled with.
I’ve gotten quite a number of seeds for the Asian Trellis beans. A cheeky grasshopper was just sitting on one today, and didnt even flinch when I stared it down. It was actively munching on the last green pod, just as pretty as you please. I greeted it and told it I hoped it was enjoying its lunch.
Clearly I have a lot to learn about making white potatoes happy!
I’ll harvest the sweet potatoes pretty soon even though the holey grasshopper bitten leaves are still green. It’ll be interesting to see how they did!
This is usually grasshopper time of the year here, but we haven’t had very many (knock on wood).
I don’t know much about taters either - but hubby has had much better luck than I have. He has better soil for one thing.
You don’t have many because they are all HERE!! LOL!
I just figure that this was my first time to try taters, so getting anything at all is a win! No place to go but up!... and there’s always next year!

If he could, would get the SUV fixed but the frame is bent, so can’t fix it.
The settlement for the SUV is okay but of course it isn’t the amount of a new one. We’ll go SUV shopping tomorrow.
Ohmigosh! Real life has taken over for a few weeks here and I’m so sorry to hear about your injuries! Prayers up and continuing for you and Bob, and I’m sorry to hear about your vehicle and glad to hear that you have your walking onions.
I am trying to find a nice dark red beet that is sweet.
I am on a limited diet, not by choice, and beets are something I can eat. However, beets run the gambit from nice and sweet, to really nasty. I’ve tried Detroit dark red and they’re OK. They vary a bit.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good, dark red beet that is on the sweeter side?

Baker’s Creek has some listed as being sweet, but I can’t remember the names. I think Hubby has only planted Detroit Red, and we pickled them.
Bob is Polish, grew up in Penn. with a Polish group of people. They know beets. He has called his sister who grew beets in Penn. to ask her which beets are sweet ones to grow. He left a message for her to call him with the names of sweet beets. When he gets an answer, I'll post it.
There are cans of beets in the pantry here and Bob cuts them up and puts them in salad. His salads are delicious. I don't cook here. Bob cooks or we buy food ready to eat or go to restaurants. We buy veggies at “Sprouts” store or Kroger and get some things from Walmart. I also don't clean anything, maids do that every other week. He is 79 and I'm 80 so using other people for cleaning and keeping up the yard keeps us from killing ourselves doing those tasks.
We are lucky the truck hit in front of my door instead of coming directly into my door. We look for another SUV today and I'm pushing the color to be white.
We have a rental Chevrolet full size car and it's the worst configured and running car I've ever been in. It lurches when the gears change so I've named the car, “Lurch”. You sit so far back from the dash, you can't see where the front of the car is.
There is no keyhole on any door except the driver door. When we come out of a store, he can't help me in until he goes around the car and opens the doors after he opens the driver door. Then, has to walk around the car again to open my door to help me in if I'm carrying something. This is one horrible put together car. We want to get rid of this rental as soon as possible which means finding one to buy. I hope we find one today.
I've spend a lot of time figuring out this new computer. Windows 8.1 acts crazier than my old computer. I spent three days trying to get my electronic library subscription to function. There should be some sort of easier transition between versions. It feels like I've landed on another planet every time I attempt to resume an activity I used to do easily on the old computer, which exhibited lots of unpredictable behaviors in part related to the catz' keystrokes initiating bizarre resettings and commands.
Probably, the same person who designed your rental car designed this computer. (*sigh) This, too, shall pass.

I’ve read somewhere that Windows 8 isn’t user friendly. I have Windows 7 and it’s easy to use, not much different than Windows XP I had before. That Dell computer totally died so I had to get another computer right away and the version then was Windows 7. That was in 2011.
Eventually, you will get used to Windows 8 but likely cuss for a while as you learn. :o)
