A bacterium that destroys tumors' dark heart shows promise
Los Angeles Times ^ | Aug 16, 2014 | Melissa Healy

When scientists injected spores of a weakened form of the bacterium Clostridium novyi directly into the soft-tissue tumors of dogs and that of a single human subject, the results were not only abscesses, fever and pain at the site--all inflammatory responses that showed the immune system had been drawn to the area. In a matter of hours, the bacterial spores quickly found their way into these tumors' necrotic cores and began replicating madly, in several cases killing the malignant tissue.

In three of 16 dogs treated with the C. novyi, tumors disappeared altogether and the animals were cured. In three other dogs, direct injection of the bacterium shrank the tumors by at least 30%. In a 53-year-old woman whose myosarcoma--a cancer of the connective tissue--had not responded to conventional treatment, a direct injection of the bacterial spores into one of one metastatic tumors resulted in "extensive tumor destruction."

I have a close friend, with the same cancer as mine, who was just a part of clinical teal where he was injected with a different bacteria.

In his tumor that had been irradiated with proton radiation and slowed own, the results were a shrinking, significantly, of the tumor. In the non-irradiated tumor he has, there was little impact.

This for chordoma, where the only effective treatment has been to cut them out whole. He and I both went through massive surgeries to have that done...me in 2010, he in 2011. Last year his came back.

They are doing human trials and the one human on whom they tried it, it shrank the tumor significantly — you might want to read the entire article and do further research.

Sounds like another promising treatment. Then again, they all sound promising, but it takes so long for them to be approved.

From the article:

Medical cases as much as a century old offer accounts of cancer remission in patients who contracted serious bacterial infections.

I had a serious bacterial infection during chemo. Gee, I hope it cured me... (fingers crossed)
