A twice-a-day pill that can cure baldness caused by alopecia has been developed by scientists.

It has enabled three patients to grow back a full head of hair within the space of just five months.

Researchers now plan to carry out further tests in the hope that it will eventually be rolled out as a standard treatment. Between 1 in 500 and 1 in 1,000 Britons are thought to suffer from alopecia areata and it is most common in young adults aged 15 to 29.

It is thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system which results in cells destroying the hair follicles.

There are no treatments and although some patients’ hair grows back naturally, others remain completely bald for life

I had thought that this would be Rogaine, but I had also thought that we might come to a point where baldness is acceptable.

I’m waiting for a pill that turns white hair back to its original color.

I’d deal with a full head of white hair any day rather than what I do not have now.

Is this the standard type of baldness or an early onset strain ? I don’t think I have ever met anyone 15-29 without any hair.

Cures only “spot baldness”, which affects 0.1-0.2% of everyone (including women).

This is not the more common male pattern baldness

My son suffers from Alopcia Areata. All the US doctors wanted to do was flood his scalp with ever more powerful steroids. I put a stop to that. Then, after his sophomore year of HS, I sent him to China for treatment. He came back 3 months later with a completely full head of hair (and spoke Cantonese as well). I was just thinking a few days ago that there must be a way to market that (totally natural) treatment regimen in the US.
