Billions of dollars of wine rocked in California earthquake

The earthquake that rocked the region also rocked billions of dollars of world-renowned Napa Valley wine.

David Duncan, president of Silver Oak Vineyards, was worried he lost "every single barrel." Instead, he seemingly got off easy; he only lost three barrels, but they were a top quality vintage.

Each of barrel holds 25 cases of wine, and each case can cost $1,300. So they lost about $100,000 in "just in the three barrels," Duncan said.

Napa Valley is home to nearly 800 wineries that produce roughly a quarter of the nation's wine.

The area was already affected by severe drought.

Now the quake's impact has rippled though the entire economy, right down to the visitors who've come here to enjoy the fall harvest.

The impact on the $13 billion wine industry is still unclear.

Upthrust and rollers can be fixed but you never can get it perfect.

Mi>Napa Valley is home to nearly 800 wineries that produce roughly a quarter of the nation's wine.

Methinks the appropriate response to this claim is "hogwash."

Napa Valley just isn't that big.

By volume it produces only about 4% of of CA's wine, much less that of the whole country.

The dollar value of Napa wine is higher. 2013 earned growers $638M. Total US is somewhere around $2500M, which puts Napa close to 25%.

I'm no expert in this field, so the two statistics might not be directly comparable.

Seems unlikely to me that roughly 3% of the crop would earn 25% of the dollars, but then wine is different from other crops.

While Napa Valley was hit, thankfully Boone's Farm was spared. They had installed earthquake attenuating devices under their casks. These devices are called Annie Green Springs.

I heard TJ Swann spent quite a few summer nights getting that retrofit done...

As the locals say:
“Sonoma makes wine, Napa makes auto parts”
Actually I have favorites in both valleys.

We better stop at that... folks will think we've been helping with the cleanup...
