Anesthesiologists can treat emergencies of any sort during surgery/anesthesia. Yes...what would make sense is that they called 911 after stabilization; although for a high end cient with lotsa money, i would have stabilized her and then called the hospital to get the appropriate resident to come and help transport her. I was not there so i cannot say for sure. And, neither was anyone else on this thread.

Your insurer would shoot you dead if you did that.

Advanced life support transport was created for this type of situation.

In the past year my daughter has gotten a degree in Emergency Services Management and is Paramedic. I have gotten my head filled with this stuff over the dinner table for the last three years.

Lots of stories about stupid people too. Lots of tax money wasted on 911 calls.

The first reports were respiratory arrest, and no one better than anesthesia to handle that, so that's why i questioned the 911 call; now FDNY says cardiac arrest--for that you sure need Emergency responders. See here.

So apparently now she has been put in a medically induce coma to help her brain recover as doctors have no idea how long she was starved of oxygen and due to her advanced age it is much more dangerous.

We love ya Joan, please don’t leave us.

Could be too much anesthesia. Or, she had an obstuction in her throat from the procedure and couldn’t breathe. Melissa’s attorney will get to the bottom of the botched procedure, if that’s the case. WHY DIDN’T SHE JUST PAY TO HAVE THIS DONE IN A REAL HOSPITAL?

I am sure it wasn’t a cost consideration.

Lots of people go to out patient surgical centers because their “boutique” doctors make more cash because they own everything.

Of course infection rates are horrible and stuff like this happens. But, they tell their clients the risks are minimal. And, for celebs, they want privacy.

Still, after an experience with my wife waking up during an “outpatient” procedure we will never go to one of those places again.

Looks like she should've apologized.

Yes, you are right about the endoscope. I really needed it, though.

I am suspicious that all of a sudden JOAN Rivers stops breathing during a surgery (endoscopy) and now they have her in an medical induces coma? What is going on?...this sound very strange to me.

She could be on a ventilator.

Sometimes with sedation, you can have an allergic reaction to it..that is why when you get ANY kind of procedure done, the hospital will make you sign a form. I had a colonoscopy done last November and I had to sign a form, I joked with the doc that I have known for a long time and said “Can I sign it Donald Duck?” LOL..any kind of sedation has risks..now as far as Joan being under a medically induced coma, that is actually recommended in all cases where a person goes into cardiac arrest, it helps the body recover..doesn’t mean when she wakes up she will be all there but they are gonna keep her under for as long as possible to help her body heal

I hope so too..she has said some things that I dont agree with a while back, but recently she had changed, and even went after the Obama’s with some classic quotes. My Aunt and cousin saw her a few months ago at one of her many shows she does around the country..she is a VERY spunky woman, when you see the way she behaves you would never imagine she is 81 yrs old..hope she recovers from this, she is a tough ol broad

We knew two people in last month who were in ‘medical induced comas’, both died. My son’s friend was hit and run victim, and the other had a stomach aneurism. So while her endoscopy did not reach that dangerous of a procedure, I get concerned when I hear that, although a necessary procedure at times...those comas are scary.

Yes she was funny and tough....I disliked some of her comments and humor, but when she hit a good one, it was good.

It was probably the sedative itself that caused her to go into cardiac arrest..my Mom has had more endoscopies than most people, she does it without sedation and has never had a problem..other than two weeks ago where she did start coughing during the procedure because a little bit of water went into her lungs but she was able to cough it out..someone who is under sedation cant cough since they are asleep it could have caused her to stop breathing..very sad..she obviously didn’t believe this would be a problem since she was scheduled to do another performance today..praying for the best

ANYONE who has professional responsibility at an outpatient center knows that it is usual and customary to call 911 if you are not INSIDE the facility where others can respond to and assist with a code situation. I work in a large, academic medical center. If anyone so much as faints anywhere on the hospital grounds, or in a distant part of the hospital, we call 911. You can’t have your professional personnel leaving the main facility. Just FYI

My guess is that you have something against CRNAs. How would you know it was propofol? I have worked with CRNAs, Residents, and other staff anesthesia attendings (anesthesiologists). You obviously have little to no experience since you seem oblivious to the fact that there are crappy providers in EVERY class, category & level of education. I would not throw myself behind ANYone level of practitioner. It depends on the individual and their experience. Don’t be so threatened. Just be educated and competent.
