Two American fighter jets flew over Dublin today — and it was very VERY LOUD
The Journal ^ | 8-31-14 | Darren Martin

‘WHAT ON EARTH is that,” was a question muttered in TheJournal.ie offices, and, if Twitter is anything to go by — plenty of other places in Dublin this lunchtime.

Why?

Well, well, these two planes carried out a fly-past of Croke Park (and, by extension, the city) as part of this afternoon’s American Football event — and scared the bejaysus out of everyone.

There were reports of car and house alarms being set off in the area.

While one reader contacted us to say it sounded “like an earthquake” from Meath Street and was a “very frightening experience”.

“The glass shook at a pub in Westmoreland Street as I was walking by,” another TheJournal.ie reader told us.

No doubt there were also quite a few startled seagulls in the city in the wake of the fly-past, which, at the risk of labouring a point, was really really INCREDIBLY LOUD…

Dubliners not accustomed to the sound of Freedom apparently. The comments on this article are stunning. This is a country ready to go out on it's own? Yeah...

Nice job PSU and UCF fans, and a great job by Sam Ficken for saving the day.

I’m on the direct flyover zone. Jets are sometimes just minutes apart when they practice touch and goes. I can tell you that while they are loud not one has ever done the silly things this person is ranting about to my home or our area.

Set off a car alarm? Please. That’s hyperbole from an unadulterated whiny lefty.

What the hell are we doing wasting taxpayer on this show of support for college football, which is one of the most corrupt institutions in our society?

F-16’s.
Rgr. The sound of freedom and many thank you’s to them from many on the ground over the last 20+ years.
ODA 525 comes to mind from a long time ago....

Just sayin’ and just a skytruck driver

I love flyovers. I love seeing fighter jets in the sky.

Memorial Day festivities in Central New York includes a flyover of many of the villages. I cannot tell you how much I looked forward to that when we lived in Syracuse.

I have family near Warner Robins, Ga. A visit used to be good for seeing several fighter jets overhead and hearing a few sonic booms. Not any more.

It is the sight and sound of freedom. When I see a fighter jet in the sky, I am reminded of those who protect us. As in “We’ve got your back!”

Good thing it was only F-16s and not a Blackbird. They would have wee-wee-ed their knickers.

“Set off a car alarm? Please. That’s hyperbole from an unadulterated whiny lefty”

Sorry, but if they are low enough and fast enough it happens. Like two of the last three years in my neighborhood during the Chino Air show. It was a F-22 Raptor this year that did it, and I believe a F-16 in 2012.

Actually, I was quite pleased to see some comments taking down this fairy and commenting that Ireland is lost if this is what scares them.

Several years ago I witnessed two fighter jets flying over my area unexpectedly. My only concern was that this was a response to a terrorist attack (I’m in the NYC area) but wow!! was that impressive.

But why would somebody wet their pants because a car alarm went off? Annoying, maybe, but no scary.

Heh, I don’t live too far away from Warton in Lancashire, where they fly Hawks, Tornados and Eurofighters all the time. I consider it a privilege. Hopefully see them flying that Taranis drone in a few years too.

I almost plotzed at the comment from some Irishman that the Irish needed these fighter planes as well. And some other Irishmen (I’ll assume a Dubliner, not an Orangeman) wrote: oh, let the RAF take care of us. The Irish have seriously lost the plot over the last 30 years...

So in Dublin is the dominant language spoken German or Russian, or English?
