CASTAIC , Calif., A badge and pistol lost by a law enforcement officer over two decades ago was found by a fisherman in the receding waters of a drought-stricken lake.
Jay Poore told KCAL that while fishing at the dam on Castaic Lake, he noticed a backpack that became exposed after a drought made water levels drop by roughly 150 feet.
"As I opened it up a gun fell out," he said. "I opened the wallet and there was a badge."
Poore, who has fished at the lake since the age of 2, turned in the items -- which also consisted of a class ring, a pager, a watch and a pocket-size calendar -- to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
Officers confirmed that the items belonged to an unnamed agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The agent said that he had visited the lake in 1992 with a friend, and that the backpack was lost to the waters when the boat they were using became swamped.
The agent said that he was heavily criticized by colleagues at the time, but was glad that the items had been found and his story validated.
Is that a Browning Hi-Power?
You know things are getting bad when even ATF agents are having boating accidents!
Sorry! It’s a Smith & Wesson, it will never work again. He should just throw it back into deeper water.
Or maybe take to the hood and get top dollar for a short club.
The weather morons have TWO DVDs always which are ALWAYS available in their "go-to" drawer:
1. DROUGHT DVDs
2. FLOOD DVDs.
Nothing has changed in 60+ years for them.
AND, since our planet has been here some FIVE BILLION YEARS, I scarcely think that ANY weather moron knows what the rain pattern really was/is/will be.
What a shame! Sad to see such a fine weapon ruined.
Looks like a Smith
M”Sorry! Its a Smith & Wesson, it will never work again. He should just throw it back into deeper water.”
Still worth $100 at a gun “buy back”!
“Is that a Browning Hi-Power”
No, thankfully.
Are we sure it's not a SIG P229?
Interesting story....it is amazing when you see things in lakes. One time, I was exploring a lake that a dam broke, so you can see things on the bottom like stone walls and sunken boats...
This sorry piece of crap of an “officer”
should have been FIRED- fishing ? with a “friend”?
Lost all of my stuff?- overboard!!?-
GUN,BADGE,WALLET, RING?!!
Here is a good example why the ATF should be abandoned
We have a sailboat and believe me it is super easy to lose stuff in the water. I can just imagine all the stuff laying at the bottom of the slip.
