Yogurt becomes New York's official state snack

ALBANY, N.Y.,- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill designating yogurt as the state's official snack five months after a contentious debate in the legislature.

Cuomo signed the bill Wednesday, five months after the state's legislature debated the suggestion from a fourth-grade class at Byron-Bergen Elementary School in Genesee County.

"This designation is a fitting recognition of the importance of this state's yogurt industry, which has experienced tremendous growth over the past few years, making New York the top yogurt producer in the nation," Cuomo said in a statement. "We will continue to work with New York producers and dairy farmers to build upon this progress and further strengthen this critically important industry."

State Sen. Michael Ranzenhofer, R-Amherst, introduced the bill in May, setting off a 50-minute debate that was far from smooth. Democratic lawmakers questioned Ranzenhofer on the floor of the Senate about the definition of the word "snack."

"I think it's self-explanatory," Ranzenhofer responded. "I mean, you have breakfast, lunch and dinner, and then you have snacks. That's the way I would define it, as a snack."

Numbers released by the Cuomo administration indicate New York took over from California as the nation's top producer of yogurt in 2012 and the state now accounts for 15.7 percent of yogurt production in the United States.

He’ll try to tax it next. His father wanted a tax on snacks, and the subject’s been broached by Dems in the State Legislature a few times over the years.

NYS has tremendous farm and wood lands....it used to number one or close to it in apples, cherries, blueberries, and of course a wonderful wine industry and good sharp NY cheese can match up to anything...except maybe Cougar Gold...

critically important industry?? Just another form of cheese...

IIRC, Chobani has the contract for all the schools in NYS thanks to Schumer. I don't think this even existed here in NYS 10 years ago.

I can think of at least one thing they eat more of in New York...now what’s the most polite way possible to name it?

I give up.

I don’t really give that much of a darn about NY; the state or the city. But if one wanted to name an official snack, why would they let skulls full of mush do it?

NY does produce a few things a heap more significant than yogurt. Yogurt goes with..ah,...er..yogurt.

NY has some decent wines; some pretty good sharp cheddars; and when I lived in Endicott, NY even had a few passable beers. What’s the tourist draw in yoh-gurt?

It must be because yogurt is PC or something.

Most people do not realize how big NY is north and west of Westchester county.
