Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced Wednesday it will spin off sports car maker Ferrari into a separate company, a move to unlock the luxury brand’s value and distinguish it from its mass-market parent.

The spinoff aims to raise money to support the newly-merged carmaker’s plans to invest €48 billion ($61 billion) over five years to compete with global giants Toyota and Volkswagen. Shares in Fiat Chrysler soared on the news.

“I think we are doing the right thing by giving Ferrari a proper, unique place in the capital markets to be evaluated and valued as a luxury automaker,” Marchionne told an analyst conference call. …

Can Ferrari stand on its own?

No.

Porsche could not survive on a volume of ~100k units.

Ferrari sells 7k units per year.

One of the German companies will end up with it.

VW already has Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini, but Ferrari would be far more valuable.

At 7k it sounds like a toy.

Enzo was often quoted as saying that the only reason he sold cars, was to finance Ferrari Racing.

~28 veh/day.

Some auto manufacturers have annual prototype production on that order.

The name of that game is exclusivity.

Demand is at least 10k units. But making 1%ers beg in line makes them want a Ferrari more. You can’t just walk up to a Ferrari dealership and order a top of the line Ferrari. You have to buy several lower end ones over years and become one of their better customers.

If they expand toward 200k like Porsche is currently doing they lose that specialness.

With 3-d metal printing and stuff.... is there any good reason we don’t have a way for people to design (within logical limits) their own car (the outer shell) on their computer?

Who wouldn’t want to see it coming off the assembly line (every car looking different even if they have the same stuff underneath)?

After WW2 Ferrari grew steadily with their race cars turned touring car models... in the 70’s Ferrari sold out to FIAT to finance their F1 team ... They were FIAT’s (and Italy’s) crown jewel ... I can’t see them going downscale for volume and I can’t see them existing as a small constructor like McLaren or Lotus...

At this point I’m hoping the Italian government forbids the sale to any foreign company...

Maybe they can create their own “umbrella” with Moto Guzzi, Ducati , Alfa and Lancia... with Guzzi and Alfa handling the lower end..

Now didn't Chrysler try this with Maserati back in the 80’s?
It was a massive fail.

Alfa Romeo and Lancia are owned by Fiat.

No news on them being sold off.

Fiat has rebuffed VW multiple times Alfa Romeo.

As recently as few months ago.

"The name of that game is exclusivity."

IMO the Prancing Horse has lost most of that cache, to better designed or more exotic manufacturers. It's become an 'old man's' car.

If you have to ask, you can’t afford to own it as a separate company!
