Today's feature is the film debut of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The legendary duo plays a couple of orange juice salesmen who get involved in comic misdaventures with lovable dingbat Irma(Marie Wilson), her shady boyfriend Al(John Lund) and her level-headed roommate Jane(Diana Lynn). Jane's boss is played by Don DeFore better known as "Mr. B" from the tv series "Hazel."

I like the old radio show, and the movie is pretty decent too, although I always thought it a bit unfortunate that the whole Martin-and-Lewis aspect overshadowed things a bit. There was a “My Friend Irma” tv-series that followed, but it was broadcast live (as opposed to being filmed like “I Love Lucy” or “My Little Margie” and such), so it never got rerun. In fact, I’m not even sure if many kinescopes survive of the series at all.

Sometimes you can see Marie Wilson earlier on, in small character parts in late-1930s Warner Brothers films, often playing the ditzy girlfriend of the comic relief. She was actually quite fetching back then, in a sort of geeky way. Moreso than later on, when she adopted that stolid, peroxide blonde look on “My Friend Irma.”

I remember a couple of episodes (kinescopes) circulating around on the VHS circuit since the 1980s. Which I bet these are. But I haven’t really heard of anything since, other than a dispiriting rumor that all the kinescopes got tossed out.

I also have a couple of issues of the “My Friend Irma” comic book, which Atlas (Marvel) put out in the early-1950s.
