Prayers for the girl.
No fire; no fuel. Even with one engine out, a Seneca should have been able to maintain altitude until a landing could be arranged. Distance Key West to Mt. Vernon is 1,300 miles.
It may be acceptable, but I still think the usage of “disorientated” sounds clumsy.

Maybe a headwind slowing their groundspeed? Forgot to switch tanks and ran one dry? icing? just throwing out common causes.

Prayers for this girl.
How sad.
No, they were on their way to Illinois—the family lived in Nashville, Illinois, a small town about 20 miles west of Mt. Vernon, Illinois. I-64 runs just north of Nashville and has a sign saying “Nashville, IL” so that drivers don’t get confused and think they are near Nashville, TN. (Normally they wouldn’t bother adding the “IL” after the place name.)
Nashville is the county seat of Washington County, Illinois.
God must have something very important for this young girl to do some day....
She asked Larry to ride with her in the ambulance and the EMTs wouldnt let him because he wasnt kin. He said hed drive to the hospital, which is about 30 miles away, but the EMTs said it wouldnt do any good because the hospital wouldnt let him see her since he wasnt kin. He said he hoped he would be able to see her again some day. He said several times how brave she was, especially for a 7 year old.

We live in evil times when the good are hampered. Sick bureaucrats.
We have a problem in Society. I actually had to save a 24 month old child from a Interstate rest area 3 weeks ago.
It bothered me something fierce.
This child came running to me. 35 degrees and raining. Diaper and a tee-shirt.
That child was fortunate it was a FReeper.
Officials say the family are from Nashville, Tennessee.
Read a later article that gave Nashville, IL as their hometown. I've driven thru southern Illinois on I-64 several times, so I was close by but unaware there is a Nashville, IL.
There is. The county seat of Washington County. About four miles south of I-64...
Sorry! I just copied the caption on the picture.
Update on local TV station:

Apparently there was initially a small fire at the crash site, and the girl tried to add sticks to it, failing due to the rain. Then she set off through the tangled woods, which are still cluttered by debris from the 2009 ice storm.
It’s an amazing, haunting story.

Possibly the little girl, Sailor, managed to get a stick burning to act as a torch, but anyone who’s tried that with wood in the rain knows it would not likely sustain for long. Still, this sure has me thinking about things to teach my daughter...
Personally, I would have driven to the hospital ANYWAY, and sat there as long as it took to get their cooperation on her behalf. But that’s just the way an old man does it, with no tolerance for our crumbling society left to be crushed by these dolts.
