Apple, in its flush of new, bigger iPhone 6 handsets, has been selling record numbers of its older and newer model smartphones in the last few months, and now its passed another significant milestone: it has managed to overtake sales of Android devices in the key market of the U.S. for the first time in three years.
[more below]
How do you explain that 85% of iPhone 6 and 6plus sales are to ex-Android users? In addition, even though these numbers look good in the US, Apple sold MORE in China than they did in the US. There are no "tiny screen iPhone users" in China to flock to stores to replace their phones. Samsung's numbers have plummeted by 29% in the last quarter after dropping 18% in the previous quarter. Sorry, your scenario just doesn't comport with reality.
“...Once the cult of Apple has the bigger handsets, sales will plummet....
...Enjoy it while it lasts Apple. In the end, they are still losing big-time to Android. Its history repeating itself, although you cant explain that to the cultists.”

I am a user of Apple products...for their VALUE. I guess that makes me a “cultist” in your mind. I sometimes wonder why folks who clearly dislike Apple products and consider Apple users to be “cultists” engage with said cultists. Did someone carrying an iPhone take your lunch money or your girlfriend?
Oh? Bolobaby, you need to change your registration to Democrat since you believe that "profits are not as important as you'd think." How do you PAY THE BILLS? Apple doesn't chase market share. They don't care to run to the bottom of the barrel.
Apple took home 87% of all of the profits in the cellular phone industry in the first three calendar quarters of last year. 87%. Savor that number. Samsung, the leading manufacturer of Android phones took home 21% of the industry's profits. The next most profitable manufacturer was Xiaomi (pronounced Show-ME) that took home a mere $7 million which is not even large enough to have a percentage blip in comparison to the other two profitable businesses in the industry. Yes, I know those figures total to 108% But that's because ALL OF THE OTHER 223 CELLULAR PHONE MAKERSwhether Android, Blackberry, Nokia, or Windows, POSTED LOSSES!
It only got worse for Samsung and the other cellular phone makers in the final quarter of 2014 with the possible exception of Xiaomi. However, the only reason Xiaomi could post any profits at all was they do not pay the royalties and license fees they should be paying for the patents and copyrights they are infringing. They cheat.
Your 13% of the market is not current data. In the last quarter, Apple even got 33% of Samsung's and LG's home cell phone market in South Korea. . . and 24% of the Chinese Market.
1st quarter 2014?
Try using current graphs, not one from a year ago, bolobaby.
Google has found they are not making much money off of their Android division at all. Most of the ad revenue from Mobile comes from . . . wait for it. . . Apple iOS users.
Simple, because any later data would not support his argument. It's called cherry picking your data. . . Michael Mann would know about that. He used it a lot for creating hockey sticks going the other way.
Posting a newer chart that completely shoots your old one out of the water is a personal insult? Please tell us exactly how that is, bolobaby?
Do NOT think you're getting as good a pad by purchasing Samsung for the same price as an iPad. I did that, and my Samsung has far better specs, bigger screen, bigger processor and graphics processor, and sucks. Slower, locks up multiple times per day, stuttering, and amazingly convoluted to get around. It's for sale. I have an iPhone and it FAR surpasses the Samsung tab in every respect with less "specs" in a head to head comparison. The apple product works great, the Samsung pisses me off. Apple wasn't kidding around about the concept of optimization. Their stuff flat out runs on what appears to be far lesser hardware.
Perhaps because he did not change the headline. . . that's what the headline said. YOU are the one changing the headline. PROOF:
These anti-Apple people just assume Apple people always lie. . . when the reverse is usually the case.
Sword,
Thanks for posting the clip of the article to demonstrate the correct title was posted.
The apple-thread troll fanbois are amazing.
I’m glad they come by. They are a living demonstration of everything they try to project onto Apple users.
And yet you blithely state that Android is their competitor and will win with lower priced phones? You can't have it both ways, Bolobaby buddy. The fact is that Apple has been taking home the majority of the profits for several years now. This single company is out selling the entire Android machine of 225 manufacturers in the United States, Japan, and several other major countries, and has even taken 1/3rd of the market in Samsung's and LGs, the two largest Android manufacturers' home market! And you cannot see it because you are blinded by your prejudice!
Apple is also taking home the majority of the profits in the Personal PC market, as well, with 57% while having only 7.1% of the world-wide market share and 12.7% of the US market share. . . and both of those market shares are rapidly growing while their competitors in the PC market are shrinking.
Your fault is in failing to see that both the Mac and iOS devices are not OLDER technology that will be left behind by your preferred technology as in your niche "electric car" to 'internal combustion car" analogy, but actually a forward step with BETTER solution of using similar technology that can do everything your 'internal combustion car" can do, but do it more reliably and with less frustration and tinkering by the user/driver. . . and seamlessly integrate with other new technology that offers the same reliability and lack of user frustration.
The fact is that the vast majority of those "cultist" you so easily disparage are actually much more computer savvy than are you, having come from the same ignorance of Macs and Apple products you have right now, but have educated themselves so that they now know much more about BOTH platforms. They know what they are talking about while you don't. You have not bothered to LEARN anything at all about what you criticize so ignorantly to people who know you are blowing smoke rings of uninformed opinion. That's why your comments are so easily shot down.
Your niche "car maker," absorbs 57% of the profits of the entire PC industry. . . and it is NOT because the are bamboozling a small, select corps of "cultists" who continually re-buy Apple's products. That cannot possibly build a company from near bankruptcy in 1998 to the largest corporation on the planet in 10 years. . . and kept it in the number one or number two place for the next three years and now back in number one with no other business even close to it and analysts talking about it becoming the first ONE TRILLION DOLLAR business in history! If you think that is what is happening you are truly delusional.
I know. It was a polite way of calling him out.
I am afraid I've gotten a lot more "in your face" with these trolls. They don't recognize manners, politeness, or even reasoned debate. Usually they just move on to another false attack. . . they point an Alinsky-like technique to keep attacking, never to respond, and never to answer rationally. Keep throwing brickbats, true, untrue, anything, but throw. . . until the thread is unpalatable to those who want reasoned discussion. There are a few, determined practitioners who do it all the time.
Sorry, it was aMorePerfectUnion that started up with the personal insults, suggesting that I’m like a dope-smoking idiot from Colorado. Bear in mind that when I was originally referring to the “cult of Apple,” I never said “*You* are a cultist” to anyone. People made made the assumption that they were the ones I was referring to, then proceeded to prove that assumption through their actions. But it was aMorePerfectUnion who started with the “*you* dope smoker” kind of talk.
The problem is, it’s hard to keep track of Apple supporters because they go absolutely NUTS when you say anything questionable about their favorite company and product. Everyone starts to sound the same. Like the Borg - you will be assimilated. Case and point: this thread. I get three or more responses for any single post I put up, often from the same person. That’s near compulsive behavior. It’s not ABABABA. It’s ABBBABBBABBB. Think about that. When you feel compelled to post THREE times in response to a single post, are you having rational discourse, or compulsive discourse?
Apple supporters won’t admit the fact that Apple lost the PC war. Maybe they’ll come back and be dominant in ways other than profit margins, but they literally lost DECADES where they could have dominated *the technology*. Instead, I get half-truths about how “great” their products are.
Here are some whole truths:
1. I am a very successful business person in IT. I’ve been in it for a long time. I watched Apple lose the PC war. Everyone in IT couldn’t give a crap about Apple for the longest time. They are having some resurgence with PCs in business now, but mostly because they opened their platform to Microsoft products. Heh. Seriously.
2. Many of us in IT who build mobile (web or native) apps do not adopt an “Apple first” strategy. Why? Because you get less exposure on an Apple device. Profits of the manufacturers aside, we want to build apps and sites that work with the largest customer base. It ain’t Apple customers. Sure, we have to account for more differences when building Android-first, but the ROI is greater because the customer base is greater.
3. This is *exactly* the same pattern that helped cause Apple to lose the PC war back in the day. IBM and Microsoft opened their platforms and said “have at it.” Apple controlled their platform like Nazi Germany. More innovation occurred on Windows PCs and Apple faded away for decades. They are making the same mistakes with their phones. Hell, my company (a big name) has an app that we can’t get through their approval process for the *stupidest* of reasons. It’s nothing really objectionable - it’s just their inability to test it properly. Mind you that it works, and we have no problems in the Android world.
So, I’m totally stoked that an American company is making crazy profits, but my original point still stands: their customer base is smaller, the profit bump they just experienced is due to pent up demand amongst their customer base for larger screens, and once their customers have the larger screens, demand will fall.
Sorry if that analysis is being lost in all the other stats flying around, which all fail to address that simple point. Everyone is throwing noise into the conversation to defend Apple in a cult-like fashion, but no one has yet to provide a sensible rebuttal to that specific analysis. Probably because it’s accurate.

Nice try, but see (your) post 7 in this thread. You may have not directly accused a person of being a “cultist” but you sure made the inference that we’re all cultists. You can be like Brian Williams and try to offer a “clarification” but just as William’s “clarification” isn’t an apology or an admission that he lied so your latest post here doesn’t extricate you from your attacks.
“...Hell, my company (a big name) has an app that we cant get through their approval process for the *stupidest* of reasons. Its nothing really objectionable - its just their inability to test it properly. Mind you that it works, and we have no problems in the Android world....”

Ahh...NOW I understand the motivation behind your anti-Apple jihad. You have a commercial product that hasn’t proven to have the necessary quality to be accepted by Apple....so, instead of working on improving your product and/or subjecting it to rigorous testing that Apple demands YOU EMBARK ON AN ANTI-APPLE JIHAD.
At least we now know where you’re coming from now that you slipped and let this information be known. To paraphrase the old proverb, “Hell hath no fury like an IT developer spurned”.
“Sorry, it was aMorePerfectUnion that started up with the personal insults, suggesting that Im like a dope-smoking idiot from Colorado”
Not so much. Better read it again.

I did point out the irrationale nature of your posts and trolling probably means you’re an Android Fanbois... But then you didn’t deny it. I also said I’m happy to have you participate because competition is good for everyone.
Sigh. I give up. No one wants to address the original content of the post which was...
Once pent up demand for larger screens is met in the Apple niche, sales will drop.
Also, for the record, the Apple app thing is a minor annoyance for us. It’s not a business driver. We are doing great without them. I’m an insider, so I can’t say more than that.

Addendum: you did arrive on the thread calling those who disagree “cultists.”
I’m ok with your freedom of expression. It’s fun to give it back to you in the spirit of the ZOT. :-)
