Allysha Tomlin may not have been the intended targeted when she was shot to death in Superior Township early Sunday morning, investigators said Tuesday. David Gordon.
Police say the 23-year-old was killed when a man she was in a relationship with, 20-year-old David Gordon, shot up her apartment trying to hit Tomlin's on-again-off-again boyfriend and the father of her 2-year-old twins.
Gordon was arraigned on an open murder charge, as well as two weapons-related felonies, at the 14A-1 District Court Tuesday, according to police.
Officials originally anticipated the arraignment was going to take place Wednesday, when a second person believed to be involved in the shooting, a 20-year-old Ypsilanti man, will be charged, according to Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.
The 20-year-old is believed to have been with Gordon when he drove to Tomlin's unit in the 8600 block of MacArthur Boulevard just before 5 a.m. Sunday and fired several rounds at the building, one of which struck Tomlin in the head, Jackson said.
Gordon, who had recently started a relationship with Tomlin, came to the unit earlier in the night and discovered her on-again-off-again boyfriend was there, Jackson said. There was an altercation between the two men that prompted Gordon to leave and return with a gun.
"He shot up the house believing the other guy was still there," Jackson said.
Tomlin was pronounced dead after police were called there for a reported shooting around 5 a.m.
The father of Tomlin's children called 911, Jackson said. He was never taken into custody and is not a suspect of any kind at this point.
Family gathered to remember Tomlin on Feb. 9 with a candlelight vigil and makeshift memorial outside the home on MacArthur.
A fundraising website has been set up to help take care of Tomlin's twins.
So this piece of garbage shoots up the apartment believing that his girlfriend, another man AND 2 toddlers were there. He needs to go down permanently.
There is nothing more dangerous to a black person than a black man and Al Sharpton continues to stir the underlying rage.
