(Full Title) VLC gets first major release across Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Android TV

VideoLAN today launched what is arguably the biggest release of VLC to date: an update for the desktop coordinated with new versions across all major mobile platforms. The world’s most used media player just got massive a cross-platform push.

The company told VentureBeat that the releases are the result of more than a year of volunteer work on the VLC engine and the libVLC library. As a result, VLC has gained numerous new features, has seen more than 1,000 bugs fixed, and has significantly increased its scope of supported formats.

Looks like a major upgrade to a very useful program. Hope to see the new version appearing in the major repos very soon now.

I prefer Kaffeine, actually, but vlc seems to play some formats better for some reason.

Anyone know how to get the IOS version without going through the US App Store?

wmv works pretty well for me and is recognized by my TV via it’s USB port.

I’ve never had a problem with BSPlayer and use it as my player of choice. VLC is good if you have a movie that’s a bit out of sync because you can make timing corrections but I haven’t seen that problem in a long time.

Download the source code, read it to make sure you are happy with it, and compile it yourself. Easy, for certain values of easy.

I understand that it is supposed to be getting Chromecast support, that would be huge.

Hmmm. Have not heard of that one. Is it as versatile as either Kaffeine or vlc for playing various formats? How about dealing with DRM?

How do you make timing corrections? I have quite a few vids that suffer from audio lag and I would love to be able to correct that from occurring.

As long as I'm breathing, I'll be here where all the smart people congregate.

And I'm still breathing right now, much to the chagrin of some.

Better, knowing that I don't have to download and compile yet another version of VLC... and update my compiler... and libraries... and....

Love VLC!(But one reason for that is it doesn’t need constant updating!)

Checked and the update is not out yet.

I always get the VLC media player with the Super audio player as they both recognize a ton of codecs and can convert to any type of file type. Both great utilities!

It depends on the version. Under 2.1.5, go to Tools - Track Synchronization.
