I’ve seen that plane fly over unless it has a twin. The yellow paint and the USAAF markings made it stand out.

Ford would likely have been flying it out to Chino Airport where there is a large collection of WWII aircraft.

I am too. What we have here is a 74(news and magazine articles from 1977 have him born 1940) buying planes instead of a hot sports car to relive his youth. In Ford's case it's about deciding to fly in his late 60's and perhaps playing Han Solo in real life. Skills diminish with age-judgment too in many cases. GOOD pilots check their planes out-RICH pilots make sure their on-ground maintenance is the best. Engine failure right after takeoff suggests either sloppy maintenance, bad judgment, or both.
I have a real problem with people flying who probably shouldn't be driving. Ford is a well known-and admitted-pot head. So add age to chemical impairment and I really have a problem with him playing fighter pilot. He could have caused lots of damage or death. How many times are the elderly allowed to crash their cars before someone stops them from driving? IF anyone does. And in Ford's case he's a liberal celebrity. If he augered into a home the media would praise him for not hitting endangered animals instead!
As for what his age had to do with engine failure asked by a previous poster-bad judgment and recklessness? It has a LOT to do with how an aged body recovers-if it can-from successive damage. The IMAGE projected of Ford being 'tough' may be valid compared to those in nursing homes, but his body is 70+ and that is NOT as strong, or resilient as it used to be. If he wants to go out in a 'blaze of glory' thinking he's a space hero, fine with me, but invincible that grandpa isn't.

What’s that saying, “Any landing you walk away from is a good one.”?

What if they carry you away, encased in carbonite?
