Walmart Meth Lab Suspect Arrested at Taco Bell
WTHR ^

The man suspected of leaving a backpack meth lab inside a Muncie Walmart last week was arrested Monday night.

Tyler Armstrong, 25, was arrested at a Taco Bell in Muncie around 8:30 p.m. by members of the Pendleton District Meth Suppression Squad. Investigators had narrowed their search down to that neighborhood, and saw Armstrong as he walked into the restaurant.

Police say Armstrong tried to resist arrest when they identified themselves, but they were able to subdue him and take him into custody.

Armstrong is charged with aiding in the manufacturing of methamphetamine, dumping controlled substance waste and criminal recklessness - all felonies. Because of the altercation during his arrest, he will also be charged with felony battery on a police officer and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.

According to Indiana State Police, the use of mobile meth labs like the backpack Armstrong is accused of using, has become the way to manufacture the highly addictive and sometimes deadly drug.

"This is the most popular method right now that you're seeing in Indiana," according to Trooper Rusty Slater. "In Delaware County, I think last year, we had 148 labs that we worked."

Slater said so far this year in Delaware County, the state's meth suppression team has dealt with 32 mobile meth labs.

"A lot of times these might be dumped in the playgrounds, parks, woods and in this case, a local Walmart," Slater explained.

It's what's inside though that can make the backpack dangerous.

"You might see nasal decongestant or you might see batteries," said Slater. "A lot of times, you might see these batteries that have been stripped. That's a tell-tale sign."

Those were just some of the items found inside the backpack left in a Walmart bathroom. The meth suppression team with the Indiana State Police suited up in protective gear to remove it.

"It could cause long term health effects, organ failure. It could cause immediate injury, burns. It's corrosive. It's acidic. It's dangerous stuff. Whether you find it in a Walmart bathroom or you find it along the road, it's hazardous," said Trooper Slater. "A lot of times, you'll see these laying in the road, just like as is. When you see these, you don't want to touch them. You want to leave them alone."

Ashley Oliver, 24, was with Armstrong at the time of his arrest and was also arrested for felony aiding in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Both suspects were taken to the Delaware County Jail. Armstrong is being held in lieu of $12,500 bond. Oliver's bond was set at $5,000.

If you had a meth lab inside Taco Bell, would anyone notice?

The “new thing” in my area is to go into a store bathroom, shoot heroin and OD.

Some of the places, I occasionally shop and I’m not thrilled that some junkie’s corpse was there not that long ago.

WTF?

If we executed dealers and users we would all be better off. Especially the people around them.

or perhaps we could section off a part of western Alaska. You get caught you are deported there. If you are found outside the zone you are shot on sight. Same with DUI.

Sounds harsh but substance abuse is an endless cycle of violence and misery for way too many people.

I’m less concerned about junkies with a death wish than I am with any government entity that commissions a ‘Meth Suppression Squad.’

The skateboarders bit was hilarious. "I just got your death penalty reduced to six-months probation!"

You said it.

Warm weather is coming and it’s Harley time, soon.

I have enough ‘road worrier’ to contend with for my own self, without adding drunken, stoned, distracted drivers to the mix.

Every year, I have at least 3 near-misses, just with cell phone yappers.

Fat lot of good it did to outlaw phone use in cars, here.

Have you tried it yet? All the cool kids are doing it.

Plus it's respectful for your family. They don't have to deal with the mess.
