Make vodka from strawberries? No one does that, says Anthony Caspary, co-founder of Ventura Spirits, a bootstrap distillery he started with his brother and two friends in the basement of an old industrial building on the western edge of Ventura. Other than the expense of the strawberries themselves, it's just too much work.

I wonder if the taste is straight alcohol, or if the essence of strawberries carries over?
In effect, wouldn’t the distillate be considered to be raw strawberry brandy, since the strawberries would first be fermented into strawberry wine and then the strawberry wine distilled?

“Like Vodka from Strawberries” could be the title of a Russian chick film.
Then maybe I’ll start drinking vodka. It happened with hard cider for me. I am glad there was a bumper crop of apples at one point, because I love the bottle I share with my husband nightly.
By the way. Having gone to school in that area. They don’t grow strawberries in Ventura. They grow in nearby Oxnard. But then again, my sister told her college friends,she grew up south of Ventura, because it was too painful to say the word “Oxnard.”

Yeah, it does sound a little like saying,
“I was born and raised in Gonad. So what?”
As a food service professional, I would call it a strawberry brandy if it didn't use any barley to get more sugars out of the starches.
I would call the base strawberry beer if it used some barley, and strawberry wine if it relied only on the sugar in the strawberries.
That would make a good question in school.
I guess that if the feds are taxing it like vodka, the feds are saying it is indeed vodka.

Legend has it that when a grower was asked what he wanted to name the town, he gave several selections. But a friend said, “Why don’t you name it after yourself: Oxnard.”
As they say, “Oxnard. It’s more than a pretty name.”
For years, we used to point to the strawberries growing along the side of the road in Pleasant Valley and be grateful, at least we we were known for the best in the world for those, but for obvious reasons, no marketing was done to proclaim the name of the land from where they came.
When I was in the Navy and surfing all over, getting out of the car in Oxnard was a guaranteed chance to fight.
Spent more time in Ventura with some local guys, one of whom has gone one to be one of the premier shapers on the North Shore.
All I remember from driving through Oxnard many years ago, it was foggy and a big artichoke field. Not unpleasant views at all.
Yes, the stinky cold waters of Hueneme, Silver Strand and Hollywood beaches made for very agro surfers.
Who was the board shaper on the North Shore? I’ll look and see if I have his board stickers in my collection.
The farm lands, the rolling hills, the proximity to the coast, all very pretty. But the smell of steer manure gave you the hint you were approaching.
My parents have a persimmon orchard in a nearby town. Got big time poached last year; such a terrible incident.
Now Oxnard has hothouse frames that are grow raspberries ( I think; it’s been a year since I was there.)
I am glad you had a pleasant experience there. When I was growing up, I thought Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees was singing about my town.. “Another Pleasant Valley Sunday...”
Some people love it because it is so clean. Others do not and prefer vodkas with a characteristic flavor such as might be carried though from a potato feedstock. However, what you taste in most vodkas are actually the remaining impurities. Regardless, all vodkas are much cleaner than scotches or buorbons, etc. The flavors in the end product are actually the remaining impurites and also residues from the aging process.
Or, like Eau de Vie, is it TERRIFIC!!!
I always think of Oxnard-snarf. Don’t ask me why.
