Fox is lowering the curtain on American Idol, ending a series that dominated television throughout the 2000s and made stars of the likes of Simon Cowell, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
The network announced Monday that American Idol will go off the air after its 15th season next spring. The cast from the past seasons, with Ryan Seacrest as host and Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. as judges, will return for a season-long celebration of the shows history.
American Idol faded over the past few years, eclipsed in the music competition genre it pioneered by The Voice on NBC. Personnel changes didnt help, and neither did tinkering with the format, as the show fell victim to what usually kills off most television seriesold age. Still, it was a solid performer for a Fox network that struggles in the ratings.

They pretty much had to force her to do that “movie”
Great American Stupid Hero
Not really. The genre was pioneered on television by Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts back in the late 1940s.
I've been busy every night it was on....for 15 years.
Darn the bad luck.

Seacrest is giving Howie Mandel a run for the money for the title of “Luckiest Man on Earth”.
That was on radio, though. I was talking about television. And Ted Mack succeeded Major Bowes as host, first on radio and then on television.
I always wanted to check it out but there was always something better on. Like the jewelry shopping network or WNBA.
I wonder what the female/male ratings split are for American Idol.
Freegards
Yep.
I’ve only seen it because the wife and daughters never missed it. But even they gave up after the third season.
About 10 year years too late.
Thank you Fox!!
Now if only ABC would cancel DWTS. I don’t understand why anybody finds that show entertaining. But I can sit and watch 4 hours of hunting and fishing shows without a problem so who am I to say.
Well, That is good news. Now if we can just get rid of everything else on network TV
It beats slinging hash.
About a year ago Bill Bennett did a commentary about the difference between Entertainment and Amusement. It boiled down top wen "Entertain" thoughts, but "amusement" is passive with out thinking.
The men wish their wives look like the female dancers and their wives wish their husbands look like the male dancers!
stopped watching it during Fantasia’s season when I realized early on that the fix was in.
When Simon Cowell left, so did half the audience.
She achieved fame because of her thermo-nuclear arse. Just like Kim Kardashian.
J Lo's J Lo is tiny by comparison. And J Lo has something KK doesn't have...talent.
