NEW YORK (AP) — When Oprah Winfrey was a youngster, the mere sighting of an African-American on television was occasion to alert all the neighbors, she recalled.

"We would call them to say, 'Colored people are on TV! Colored people are on!'" The only black child she was ever likely to see telecast was the unflattering role model Buckwheat on the ancient "Little Rascals" comedies, Winfrey added.

Oprah is sort of lying. Nat King Cole had a show in 1956 (when Oprah was two), and he was not the first black on TV. Cole was a major star. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_African-American_firsts

Amos ‘N Andy. I heard it as a kid when it was on the radio. It was the name of my first cat. I thought the title was one word!

Greg Morris on Mission Impossible was absolutely terrific. One of my favorite TV characters ever. I also thought Ivan Dixon was very talented. He appeared in numerous shows before becoming a regular on Hogan’s Heroes, such as The Twilight Zone. These guys were and remain role models for intelligent, brave, and heroic men, but ignored by the black kids today who look up to thugs.

Greg Morris and Ivan Dixon were some of my favorites too.

And you know the funny thing? I never thought of their color back then, just their talent.

How things have changed in the Hope+Change era.

unflattering role model Buckwheat

Who would you rather have as a role model for your kids: Oprah or Buckwheat?

Wikipedia credits someone that I knew, with having the second TV show starring an African-American woman.

“She was the second African-American woman to host her own television show — after Hazel Scott with The Hazel Scott Show on DuMont in 1950 — with The Hadda Brooks Show (1957)”

Buckwheat was much more entertaining than Oprah.

That is total B.S. It was nothing like today but Jack Benny, some other shows mentioned on the thread, I recall The Twilight Zone -- what we did not have was black personalities saying that old white people have to die to end racism as Winfrey was quoted.

We only had black and white when I was young. Got into a fight with a kid at school when the Wizard of Oz was broadcast. He said the witch was green.

Didn’t find out his family had a color TV until after the fight.

My buddy and I have a game to find the “black” whenever any commercial comes on. And very, very seldom do we ever NOT find one somewhere.

Never mind commercials.
I have seen more black presidents, five star generals, admirals, astronomers, heads of NASA, expert surgeons and airline Captains in movies in the last ten years than in the previous 60. And more astounding, when they appear, I don't need subtitles to understand the dialog.

By that measure, blacks have to be at least 50% of the population.
But the politically correct attempt to make them feel better about themselves just seems to fail to have the desired effect. Quite the opposite.

Do the same with Bank advertisements in magazines. There’s always on representative of each: White, black, Asian or Hispanic and always there’s a woman.
