Many dogs live with a strong sense of purpose. You can see it in Border Collies, rounding up the sheep. That’s a highly energetic breed, that needs the regular stimulus of excitement due to being busy. Many people are that way as well, especially men, who thrive at work because they feel necessary.

I will say that once, when I was taking a bath, my cat took my hand in his mouth and tried to pull me out of the tub, backing up and trying to hold onto my palm with his little teeth without breaking my skin, thinking I was going to drown.
