Survey says: 35 percent of Americans would expatriate

As the Fourth of July weekend looms and Americans prep their grills and ready their fireworks, some citizens are packing their bags.

A recent online poll of more than 2,000 adults by TransferWise, a peer-to-peer money transfer service based in the United Kingdom, revealed that 35 percent of American-born residents and emigrants would consider leaving the United States to live in another country.

This percentage greatly increases for those age 18 to 34. More than half of millennials, a whopping 55 percent, said that they would consider leaving the U.S. for foreign shores. Among them, 43 percent of men and 38 percent of women noted that a higher salary would be a factor in their relocation decision.

Vote for crap government and you get a crap country. Maybe they’ll put it together someday and won’t think about leaving. Especially millennials.

I know a couple planning on retiring in Puerto Rico or Belize. Another couple plans on Bali. I’ve spoken to people who already spend significant time in Mexico. The chief concern is money. But other concerns are social unrest and an ever more energetic and intrusive government.

America, you’re drunk. If you won’t go home, don’t blame the folks who just want to get away from you.

The percentage may go up if Hillary is elected next year.

In 2012 I shared a train compartment in Europe for several hours with a middle-aged Texan and two young Swedish women. The Texan claimed to be searching for a country to move to if Obama was re-elected. The Swedish women got a real earful from the two of us about Obama--probably all new to them (they spoke fluent English).

I’ve heard of other people retiring to the Philippines. You can rent a nice house for $400 a month and get a housekeeper for $50 a week or less.

I have my plan to expatriate. But I will be coming back to Texas on a regular basis to visit family. The cost of living overseas is much lower and my pension will stretch much further.

Plus my relatives and a select few friends will have a place to come vacation.

I’ve heard of other reasons men want to go to the Philippines. And it has to do with female companionship. No I’m not talking prostitutes. I’m talking about meeting women there who were raised in a different culture, who have more traditional ideas about the men in their lives and how their lives should be. The comparison to American women helps tip the balance for some men considering overseas retirement.

I don’t know if I’d move to another country unless I see something better than declining America. But I do want to have my ashes scattered on a lake in County Mayo, Ireland.

My sister’s housing was a guarded compound in the Philippines. (Officer at Clark.) She said having a guard limited the robberies to just the robbers related to the guard.

I’m not sure about that. I’ve worked with Filipino women (in Hawaii and California) and they were hell on wheels when it comes to domestic situations. I’ve listened to them on the phone “blessing” their husbands out and dictating orders. I’ve seen their husbands cowering in their presence — not situational, but a continual state of cowering. A friend of mine explained that it’s a matriarchal society and the women rule the roost.

I can understand that they could lure in a man with a feigned demure persona at the get-go. After that...

Trust me, I’ve considered it. I even had someone Freepmail me from the Philippines offering to help me relocate.
