Obviously don’t know any details about this man and what his life was like, but his behavior with that cat is indicative of a sociopath, and IMHO most sociopaths come from pathological households. I’d bet good money that this guy fits that bill. When you don’t provide your children with a nurturing and compassionate upbringing, you hurt your child - and potentially all those whom your child might hurt.
