Larry Ira Estrin, 62, was at a vehicle checkpoint near Sherman Way and Lankershim Boulevard when a police dog screening cars with its handler signaled that it had detected a firearm, Los Angeles police said.

...

Authorities found a loaded gun under the passenger seat and detained Estrin. He was being booked Wednesday afternoon on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a loaded firearm and was held in lieu of $35,000 bail, said Sgt. Kyle Kirkman of the LAPD’s North Hollywood division. Estrin, of Los Angeles, will probably be released later in the day...

He would have fled as soon as a he saw Elmer Fudd walk up to the middle of the stage and fire into the air.

Seems like a fine opportunity to challenge LA’s stupid anti-gun law under Heller.

Have a gun in your car: $35K bond.

Enter the country illegally and you get a driver’s licence, health insurance, college tuition.

At least they’re letting make bail.

The cop even said it seemed the guy forgot the gun was in the car.

Problem is it being “concealed” under the seat. If he had it in the open on the seat, I’d agree it would be good for challenge.

Dog can detect a gun?
I didn’t know that was possible.

In CA, unless you are lucky enough to have a carry permit,
you cannot have a gun in your car unless it is unloaded and locked in a case (and the glovebox doesn’t count).

The dog detected it? What does the dog key on, Hoppes, cosmolene, gunpowder or the sweat of a guilty conscience?
I never trust the dog anyway because the officer interprets it and who knows if he’s making it up or making the dog alert?

Just because he was right this time doesn’t make the dog that discriminating; did the cop say the dog alerted on a gun or that he alerted on something so it’s wide open and for all we know the cop thought the guy had drugs?

Maybe the gun was planted there. Like the one found under the park bench last week.

Sadly, yes.

There is nothing to interpret as long as the dog is well trained. A good dog gives a clear and obvious signal such as sitting at the point of alert once it detects whatever it has been trained to find.

How do you know the dog's training wasn't to get it to sit giving the officer probable cause? Ever watch Cops?

I lived in CA for 15 years and this doesn’t surprise me.
Living in CA is like dating a Supermodel.
Eventually you get tired of dealing with the BS.
