Texas A&M leads Princeton Review list of most conservative state schools

Young people tend to take a left turn in college. Not so in Texas. Student bodies in tune with right-wing values thrive in a few of the state's top colleges. The Princeton Review released last week its annual list of the 380 best colleges in America. Among those nearly 400 schools, the publication narrowed down a list of the most conservative student bodies. Three Texas universities figured into the top 15.

Those schools -- Texas A&M, Baylor and the University of Dallas -- feature in other categories often associated with right-of-center politics. Students at all three institutions are some of the nation's most religious and least welcoming to LGBTQ students. Angelo State University, in San Angelo, is also a top religious school. Baylor, a private Baptist university, also earned a spot under a category called "Scotch and Soda, Hold the Scotch." (Mormon school Brigham Young University ranked no. 1 overall in that area).

Ah, they need to re-look at Baylor. There are some changes in Waco.

Alas, my undergrad alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin, turns students left at a dizzying rate...I told both of my daughters that I’d much rather have them be Aggies (if that were the only choice) than Longhorns.

Class of ‘98. Gig’em!

But. It was at Texas A&M where I learned that when Southern Dems learned they could buck FDR on stuffing the Supreme Court, they aligned with Republicans and it was the resulting 50 yrs (this was taught to me in the mid-90’s) of conservative control of the House of Representatives, starting in 1933, that has driven our nation into a ditch.

Take it for what it’s worth.

I wanted my grade, or I would have countered, and desperately wanted to counter, “So, you’re saying the conservatives brought us civil rights and the Great Society, not to mention the nuts and bolts of the New Deal???”
