It is one of the US worst secrets that Joe McCarthy was very much correct as to communist influence in the US. That Ike took such an open and strong stand against what McCarthy was telling the people takes a lot of the glitter away from Ike as seeing what was best for the US. His pathetic treatment of Patton also downgrades Ike in my listing of best US persons in US history leaving out the rumors of his association with his driver Kay (something) .

Anyone who is a serious fan of all things Watergate really ought to read Silent Coup: The Removal of a President

This book convinced G. Gordon Liddy that the lone author of the Watergate breakin was none other than John Dean, and considering that Liddy went to jail over his own role in the affair his opinion didn't come lightly.

The co-authors, political liberals and no fans of Nixon, began writing their book as a "harmony" of Watergate memoirs- an attempt to take all the accounts by the principals involved and try to make sense of them.

Ironically they began with John Dean as their outside adviser. As time went on they noticed some evidence pointing towards Dean; and when they asked him what it meant Dean turned hostile, which didn't answer their questions but did whet their appetite for answers. By the time they finished their book they were convinced that Dean had hatched the burglary all on his own, and it all began as a plan for hiding the past of his girlfriend/wife Mo Biner, who had once been a callgirl working out of the DNC offices.

One of the facts that the authors of Silent Coup uncovered is that Bob Woodward had been a lieutenant in the Navy assigned to the White House. And his job took him into regular contact with Alexander Haig.

I don't think that they ever uncovered any role by Haig in Watergate, but it does illustrate that Woodward was known to people inside the Nixon White House before he began his career as a Washington Post reporter.

...and for beating “The Pink Lady” Helen Douglass (I think) in the election for the House of Representatives that began his political climb (noted rabid right-winger John F. Kennedy donated money to Nixon’s campaign)....

Nixon wasn’t going to be given the chance to expose anything.

Remember that the reason he resigned is that Barry Goldwater, Howard Baker and another GOP Senator (can’t remember who) went to the White House and told Nixon that the fix was in, and they were going to vote for removal if it got that far.

A previous book by Shepard “The Plot to Make Teddy Kennedy President” shows that a lot of the motive for taking down Nixon was because the Kennedy forces felt it was Teddy’s turn after the deaths of JFK and Bobby - many of the people involved in working against Nixon were Kennedy clan loyalists and holdovers in government acting supposedly to bring him to justice while twisting the law and procedures to destroy him instead....

> One of the main culprits of the Watergate scandal, John Dean, who spent 4 months in prison, surfaced as a media hero. He has also surfaced as an expert on the alleged scandalous behavior of the Bush Administration. He wrote the book, Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush.  But the facts, which have survived several challenges in court, indicate that Dean had a much bigger role in Watergate than reported by Woodward and Bernstein. The book Silent Coup argues that the Watergate break-ins were really meant to cover up embarrassing information about a call-girl ring whose “Madame” was a roommate of John Dean’s wife, and that John Dean ordered the break-ins. Watergate, as Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy maintains, was “a Dean Operation.”
