The Queen today surpasses the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria to become Britain's longest-reigning monarch. But rather than mark the milestone with high-profile celebrations, it is business as usual for Her Majesty as she carries out official duties in Scotland. With Prince Philip by her side, the Queen was greeted by cheering crowds as she arrived in the village of Tweedbank, where she opened the new £294million Scottish Borders Railway. In a speech to hundreds of well-wishers, the monarch thanked supporters for their 'touching messages of great kindness' on a day she described as a 'milestone', adding it was one she had never aspired to reach. Meanwhile, David Cameron has led tributes to the Queen, comparing her reign to a 'golden thread running through three post-war generations'.

Too bad she didn’t take a strap to a couple of her kids when they were growing up.
She became Queen about the time many Freepers were born.
That was a nice thing to say, thank you.
When Charles is King (ugh) and you guys once again have a Head of State to be proud of, then I hope to return the favor :0)
She’s been “honored” about 10 million times for a “job” that basically entails having someone else dress you, feed you, travel first class, smile, own thousands of acres of land stolen from monasteries, and earn an obligation to speak up when pressing issues affect her realm. But the only time I’ve heard a real squawk out of her on an issue of importance was when Parliament told her she had to pay taxes, part of the upkeep on her own homes and part of the cost of the restoration job at Windsor Castle which she owns. Everyone knows that “taxes are for the little people”. I am a small “r” republican.
Does Her Majesty show any signs of slowing down? They’re a long-lived bunch but she’s approaching 90. Heaven forefend but can we expect to see her turning the scepter over to Charles any time soon?
Poor Charlie - all dressed up and nowhere to go.
He’ll likely be 80 before he gets the throne
Her Majesty will never abdicate. She considers her role as a sacred contract. Her faith is very important to her. If nature and time render her unable to fulfil her duties then Charles might serve as Prince Regent, but she will never abdicate. The memory of her uncle remains strong.
From the moment she became queen and met with her first prime minister, Winston Churchill (who adored her) she has done her best. The portion of the British population who consider themselves republicans (with a small ‘r’) are smaller today than during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Elizabeth the Second must have done something right.
I think she even won over Johnny Rotten.
Her Majesty is part of a fading era, the ones who remember The Blitz and the The War. We will not see their kind again in our lifetime.
During my trip to London in ‘06, you could still see buildings being demolished that bore battle damage six decades after The Blitz.
That generation will not forget, but the Brits of today are deliberately turning their backs on history.
Nothing against Elizabeth, but it was a better country under Victoria.
I’m aware of her steadfast refusal to abdicate in favor of Charles. I was more inquiring about her health and stamina, considering her age and relatively hectic schedule.
And Prince Phillip’s health is none too great either, as I understand it.
Of course. Apologies. The Queen is in remarkable shape for her age, and Prince Philip’s health has improved since the scare that hospitalised him during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, but they are 89 and 94 years old respectively and nothing lasts forever.
Next milestone is the Queen ‘s 90th birthday next year. National celebrations are being planned. As her first and favourite prime minister would have said: K.B.O.
My fear would be when Philip dies. He has been her rock.
My thoughts exactly. What with the ill-mannered brood of hers and the tarnish they've brought on the Crown, it has been hell on the old girl. She's needed someone to sustain her.
Speak for yourself. My mother remembers, shortly after I was born, watching a TV report about the Queen visiting a Canadian power dam while she was trying to feed me (I was a finicky infant) and my mother was thinking that the queen didn't have to worry about feeding finicky babies.
But the Queen had to cut her trip short due to "illness." Seems the Queen was in the family way. (Prince Andrew) Made my mother feel better that even royalty had suffer sometimes.
If the queen lives too much longer she’ll need to learn a middle east language.
