Bad Flu Shots? - Vanity
10-30-15 | RetiredTexasVet

Bad flu shots. Two people in San Angelo, TX recently got flu shots and were hospitalized the next day. One was a 9 year old girl who received a flu shot and was in critical condition in the hospital the next day. Another was a working woman who received the flu shot and was hospitalized the next day.

Wonder if this was a bad batch that was local or have there been other cases in Texas or nationally?

While I strongly support maintaining a good serum level of Vitamin D through supplements, because it has several actions against viruses, I would still recommend playing it safe by getting a flu shot.

Importantly, this year, the flu season in the southern hemisphere was correctly predicted, and of the (typically) three strains in the vaccine, one was accurate for the dominant type of flu, but a lot of people still got sick after vaccination.

However, flu is very, very tricky, in that it has a unusually large number of “flexible” genes, allowing it to mutate at great speed, to either a weaker or stronger strain. This means that vaccines are dependent on what I would call the “cousins approach”.

Say a vaccine is prepared for a given strain. It will likely also work well on mutated strains descended from it, as well as “first cousin” strains, for which it will provide partial protection. But when you get to second and third cousin strains, its protection becomes marginal or ineffective at best.

And the immune system works much the same way. The closer a strain is to one the immune system has previously experienced, the faster and more measured the response. A novel strain, however, might be all over the body before the immune system even notices it.

And *then*, the immune system might overreact, with what is called the “cytokine storm”, which can be more deadly than the flu itself. This happened most recently in Ukraine, and doctors were horrified that it made the lungs of the deceased look “burned”.

Vitamin D helps a lot, because it opens “immune pathways” to fight infections, a breakdown product of it erodes the viral coat in the bloodstream, and it also acts as an ACE inhibitor, which moderates the immune system and prevents it from overreacting.

However, it can only do so much. So think of it together with vaccine as a “shield and sword”. Vitamin D offers some protection like a shield, but you need the sword of the vaccine stimulating your immune response to that particular virus, to have a much better defense.

2 words...Science Czar (John Holdren, author of Ecoscience”. God protects my family from disease. I can understand why folks choose to go the vaccination route, but we prefer faith. My 95 year old relatives never received man-made immunizations and they are going strong towards 100. Concerning government, Leviathan does what it pleases, whenever it pleases...

I just looked up John Holdren on Google, and what I found out is that he has a PhD in some sort of physics; his background does not make him an expert on public health, nor do I see that he is influential in setting *any* kind of public health policy. People who set the public health policies are actually physicians and medical researchers, and they examine the work of thousands of medical researchers in order to come up with the best, science-based policies.

No offense, but you can choose to believe that God protects you from disease all you want, but the evidence is that no amount of faith protects anyone from infectious disease. I'm sure all of the people who were dying of the Black Death in medieval Europe prayed a lot to be spared from the disease--but that disease was devastating. Even before the days of vaccination, a small number of people lived to ripe old ages--that doesn't mean anything except that they were lucky, and managed to avoid becoming infected or did not become very sick when they did encounter those pathogens.

Back in the 1800s, it was very common for people to pose their dead relatives in life-like positions and take their picture. They did this because photography was so difficult and expensive in those days that the picture of the loved one in death was often the only picture ever taken of that person. Those pictures are on the internet now. One striking thing about them is the number of dead children featured in those pictures. Infants, toddlers, pre-teens... sometimes, even whole families were arranged in those pictures. The most common reason for those deaths was infectious disease.

God did help us combat infectious disease. He did so by giving some of us high intelligence, strong curiosity, and a burning desire to end those diseases that still kill people today. We've used those gifts very effectively, and found a lot of cures and preventatives--but we still have a ways to go. Infectious disease is still a top ten killer.

WE gave up the flu shot 6-8 years ago. Most years the actual flu that evolves is not the strain that the vaccine is developed to resist. Last year the shot was about 48% effective. Not worth the risk. I have not had the flu in 15 years.

What I would like to see developed is a vaccine for that nasty upper respiratory virus that goes around every year. Mr. GG2 and I are now in the fifth week after rounds of medication and we still have to lie down and rest from just going to the grocery store. Its at epidemic levels in GA and everybody we know that has had it is in the same shape. I’m going to die from that before the flu ever gets me.

It would be more prudent IMHO for government to mandate Vit d3 testing for all...and make sure people are at good level in winter when most sickness occurs

At Wal Mart or on line get the 5000 size ones. They are tiny soft footballs, gelcaps I think they call them. Not only are they the most in a single cap but I, at least, can take easily 32 of them at once which is what I did 9 years ago when I had a laid-out-on-the-couch-and-hurting dose of flu. I took them about 0800 hours and by 1800 hours I was fine- flu GONE. That was the last virus I have had. The 5000 iu size is also the most cost-effective. 2 of them are a lot cheaper than 10 1000s. I actually get them $65 worth at a time on line so I don’t have to reorder for for 3 years. I have a tiny camper size refrigerator I found for $10 that I keep them in.

My husband had a flu shot a week or so ago. He’s fine. We live in Massachusetts.

NOT mg. MCG or iu. I did not write mg. I did correct someone else’s “mg.”

Lots of sunshine/D-3. Lots of C. lots of turmeric/curcumin. Look that one up. There is another one for cancer that you have to convince a doctor to try which is blood irradiation with UV. You can get a kit for it on line. It is an old treatment, pre pharma days. I don’t know enough about it to say it has any efficacy. Again you have to look it up and study it. The gear is not expensive.

You are much more likely to get sick from a flu shot for one reason or another than from Sunshine/D-3. I would venture to guess that if you do both shots and D you will be sick more likely than if you do the D alone. The government says each year that the shots are only 20% or 60% or some % effective and never 100%. I admit my sample is small, perhaps a couple of dozen people I have successfully proselytized and a few more I know who were already doing it. Over the time that all of them have been using the supplements there has been zero flu among them. I would say zero colds but some are subject to seasonal allergies and sometimes one can’t tell for sure. Three, including myself 9 years ago, used megadoses (900 iu per pound of body weight) to end almost immediately -12 hours or less- highly debilitating cases of flu.I got a flu shot in 1966 that almost knocked me out of the Air Force and have not had one since.

We moved into a small Texas town in 1963 and lived there until .1979. As soon as our children started school we started experiencing the flu, every year.

I learned that when the children entered high school, if they had not missed a single day, they didn't have to take the final exams in May.

The kids went to school sick no matter what and passed their illnesses on to other kids who brought it home to the whole family.

I read somewhere later after we moved from there that Angleton Texas had the highest rate of flu in the whole state.

We started taking the flu vaccine and have never had the flu again.

Vitamin D-3 prophylaxis does not depend even an iota on getting the strain of the flu right. Flu shots are charity for the drug companies. If you just send a check once a year to your favorite drug company, abjure the vaccinations, and take the supplements you will be healthier and will have the satisfaction of having helped a needy American Pharmacological company.

If it’s a virus, especially but not limited to respiratory viruses, take the D-3 daily. You won’t have that problem any more. If it is bacterial or allergies then it probably won’t help it.

I have never heard of a bad reaction to vitamin D (D-3 if you get it in a gelcap instead of from the Sun) short of taking 60k iu or so a day and it seems to be headaches and lethargy. The immediate cure for that is quit taking so much of it. You don't stay out under the cloudless sun in July all day either. That will make you feel less than your best, too.

There is always a small percentage of people who react to vaccines of any kind..

Often it’s a one off event as they never react again...

Our chemistry is a bit complex.

Having said that, I do not participate in the flu shot program as it messes with my immune system.
