UNION COUNTY, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas mother has been charged with child endangerment after she gave her 10-month-old son bourbon in a bottle.

KATV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1GWGNrY ) that family members found the child unresponsive. He was flown to Arkansas Children's Hospital with a blood alcohol content of .19 percent.

Twenty-eight-year-old Lori Sheppard told police she was trying to relieve her teething infant's pain. Sheppard said she had already given him infant Tylenol and Motrin when her mother suggested she rub alcohol on his gums.

I don’t believe the story, completely.

There is a solution you can buy to wipe on a baby’s gums during their teething.

My pediatrician (old country doctor) had my mom rub whiskey on my gums. 40 years ago it was ‘old wisdom’ now its a crime.

Although .19 is a bit high for just teething, I suspect she was using it to get him to sleep

We had teething rings. Worked then worked now. Don’t see why this mom did not try them.

...

They’ll need to check his kidneys and liver, too.

I’m guessing it’s spirits of dill, as “feniculum” means “dill”.

That practice was not uncommon when I was a child. One of my sisters did that with one of her babies, as well.

Giving babies a *small* amount of spirits to ease teething aing used to be a standard practice in those parts. Most people I knew used cherry brandy or the like. Never heard of anyone using bourbon.

The idiot didn’t rub it on his gums she put its his bottle and left him alone at home.

“The mom claimed that she briefly left the trailer, and returned home later to find Ronald “unconscious and unresponsive.” The child was airlifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, according to a Union County Sheriff’s Office report.”

A bit? Uh, yeah; I'd say almost 21/2 times the legal limit for intoxication would be considered "a bit".
