Won't quote the article as it's pretty short, you can go read it if you must.
But I'll just say ratings were down sharply, in both the overall demo, and the young demo as well.

SNL hasn’t been funny in decades.
Not to mention the skit about young women’s first arousals, complete with pillow humping, crotch and breast grabbing and the like.
It was, in a word, disgusting - and not funny.
And decades ago, a lot of it wasn't funny either. Yeah, some great skits, but a lot of dull filler. My kids gave me a few seasons of the early years on DVD. A lot of it was just not funny.
Trust me, when SNL started in the mid-70’s, we all thought it was very funny. Last Saturday night, I thought the opening was funny, but it degenerated from there. The skit about the ‘awakening of young women’ was disgusting and the high school ‘vignette’ skit was nothing but Lib indoctrination. SNL should go away. It is likely ruining young minds and we sure don’t need more of that in this country.
Too bad, this one was actually funny.
SNL was never entirely funny.
If there were one or two funny segments per show, they did well.
Every year there are one or two shows that shine. Saturday night was probably an 8 out of 10. Trumps was about a 4 of ten.
Yeah, because young girls don’t masturbate.
It is on after 11:30 for a reason. Sometimes it is crass. But usually, the crassness has a basis in reality. And that is why its funny.
Actually, I thought Cecily Strong did a good, respectful open.
Numbers may have been down because folks were watching news updates from overseas.
I loved SNL back in the 70's during my college years. As to the risque material, I seem to remember that SNL always pushed the envelope. In it's early years, the show was considered rather daring because it was live, and one never knew what would happen. I remember one where Elliot Gould was host (he was a popular SNL host back then) and he started the show by singing Cole Porter's "Anything Goes". At the end of the song, he said "and on this show everything goes!". Unfortunately, the material of those years would be considered quite tame today. In order to be provocative and shock the audience, they have to take it farther and farther.
And I think the show has always had a liberal bias. They made fun of Gerald Ford all the time, but portrayed Jimmah Carter as totally cool. I remember a skit in which they depicted Richard Nixon as a vampire and guest host Christopher Lee had to drive a stake into his heart. Yeah, I get that it was Christopher Lee, famous for playing Dracula, but can you imagine Obama being depicted like that?
It's not funny now and it probably was not that funny then, when we thought it was.
To me, crassness and vulgarity are a bit different. I would put skits about masturbation in the vulgar category. Sorry, but vulgar is never funny.
That’s fair.
What I think they are doing, with this strong female cast, is trying to be more edgy in their “feminist” way. That group, doing the songs, has done some very, very funny stuff over the last couple of years.
I don’t think this was their “finest” effort. But, I have daughters, now in their twenties. I know what its like to walk in and find them.....in “personal” moments when they were early teens. It was embarrassing, and reminiscent getting “caught” in my youth. I explained to them later how doors worked. And that I would never come in without knocking.
So there were parts of it that I found “amusing.”
But, to each his own. My guess is that neither you nor I are in them demographic target. More than once I’ve had to have my iPad nearby to look up a comment in order to stay current.
Getting old sucks....
I have been watching SNL since its beginning. Some times it’s funny sometimes it’s not. The actors are less of the problem than the writers. This year it has been pretty bad.
I blame Will Ferrell. He's the "master" of the genre, such as it is.
It's not that I don't get the joke. I get it. It's a one-note-joke, and it just isn't funny.
I liked some of the casts you mentioned. I also like Julia Louis-Dreyfus when she was on, and that one-season run with Billy Crystal (10th season) and others. However, if I saw reruns of it, I doubt that lightning would strike twice for me.
Some things still would, I suspect. Still enjoy the Church lady and the characters that would visit (Jan Hooks as Tammy Faye with Phil Hartman as Jim Bakker, Hooks as Jessica Hahn). Still enjoy the Makin’ Copies stuff. Wish they would put all the really good stuff on one DVD. They could sell millions!
Last night on Saturday nght live they insulted Trump and his supporters in a way I have rarely seen. Called everyone a wild eyed window licker. And it wasn’t in jest.
