WASHINGTON (AP) â Donald Trump and Ben Carson could dangle the possibility of independent runs for president well into the primary season next year, but they can't wait forever.
State filing deadlines would give the two Republicans until about March to launch independent or third-party campaigns, experts said. That would give a well-financed campaign enough time to gather sufficient signatures on petitions so the candidate could appear on the ballot in every state.
Starting next summer would be too late.
"Ross Perot in 1992 didn't start petitioning until March," said Richard Winger, editor of Ballot Access News. "He was on the ballot in every state."

Just posting this because it seems informative.
Comments are welcome.
I suggest Cruz, Trump and Carson stay pool their delegates and shove it down the Establishment’s Throat.
I am not liking what I think this means.
Trump maybe,Carson is done.
It is the GOPe that is pushing this crap! What they don’t get is how many Conservatives will leave and let the GOPe go down in flames!
Your bias is showing, AP
The two party system is broken(where have I heard that before?). Look what it has brought, trillions in debt, crony capitalism, etc, etc. We need more competition in politics.
Wouldn’t it be better with more parties, ie more ideas in the political marketplace, with a runoff until somebody gets more than 50%?
I do not know how it would work with the electoral college, but right now a third party run is impossible and usually just splits the vote on one side, ie Perot.
There are two things that need more competition, the media and politics.
A third party run would pretty much guarantee either Hillary or Sanders in the WH.
The solution is runoff elections, but they would need to be implemented in all 50 states. All elections are at the state level except for the electoral college, which is the only federal election.
Runoff elections would destroy the control of the 2 major parties.
You’re right! That means we better hold our noses again for Jeb. (Rolls eyes)
Trump or Carson wouldn't have to get on the ballot in every state. They have to either get on the ballot in enough states to win where they have an advantage or get on the ballot in enough states to influence the outcome in significant states. What happens if Trump is only on the ballot in the states that would otherwise be safe for Hillary? What happens if he is only on the ballot in the states that would otherwise be safe for Romney/Bush/Rubio/Christie/RINO-of-the-day?
I'm not advocating either option. My point is that a third-party run could matter even without a chance of victory. What I'd like to see is a fair primary and a fair convention, where Trump voters would have no reason to object to the outcome, whomever the nominee may be. What I'd like to see is a fair primary in which the GOP establishment would support the nominee, whether it is Trump, Carson, or even Cruz.
They’d probably run Romney again. Either way, the Dem’s win.
Stay and destroy the GOPe. Go third party, and the GOPe wins again. The GOPe isn’t about winning elections.
Some states have ‘spoiler laws’ , whereby, eg Texas, you must declare your party and can’t change parties after a certain date. You won’t appear on the ballot in an example such as this.
I believe the spoiler law for Texas has a December deadline, so if Trump jumps, he won’t be eligible to appear on the ballot in Texas....he will have to depend on a write-in campaign.
When is Bernie going to run third party?
Ah, but if you aren’t part of the GOPe, you are already a third party!
If Trump can navigate the spoiler laws, I believe he will pull enough from both parties to win.
By that time, he will have a comprehensive and strategic plan to pull from specific demographic groups.
By March it will pretty well look like a Trump landslide. Who’s going to beat him?
