The unconventional Father Charles "Chuck" O'Malley (Bing Crosby) is assigned to St. Mary's parish, which includes a run-down inner-city school building on the verge of being condemned. My wife and I love this movie. It started when my parents showed it to us one Christmas and I loved it so my wife and I watched it one of our Christmas’. We have the kids watching it now every year......some of them find it ok but a few love it. Our next favorite is the George C. Scott A Christmas Carol......absolutely LOVE that movie. Besides The Grinch who stole Christmas and Frosty, A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott is the best Christmas movie in history.

Nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one.

So this whole “Christmas” thing would seem to be pretty much wasted on you.

This movie did a lot to blur the (non-serious) Catholic-Protestant tensions in my childhood neighborhood. My (staunchly Protestant) mother was overcome when Bing’s mother came down the aisle in the end, and the Protestants just couldn’t resist singing Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral.

THIS is a CLASSIC. I’ve been watching it for over 45 yrs. You have to be raised in that kind of setting to really get into it. One of my All Time Favorites!!!

Thanks!

Yep...Loretta Young and Celeste Holm. The song was nominated for the Oscar’s Best Song that year. I first saw it on HBO years ago when they played old movies. I came home from a Christmas party and had gone to bed and forgotten to turn off the tv. The opening theme awoke me in the middle of the night and I couldn’t turn it off. Hugh Marlowe is so young and handsome and Elsa Lancaster is her typical self. You will recognize the other character actors. In recent years I have given it for a gift to my friends and, to a person, every one has been grateful for the movie and some watch it every year. Very much a “message” movie and reminder that our lives are in the hands of God.

... when Bing’s mother came down the aisle in the end, and the Protestants just couldn’t resist singing Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral...I loved that segment too, but I may be wrong - I think it was in "Going My Way" with Barry Fitzgerald as the old priest, not "The Bells of St. Mary's" with Ingrid Bergman as the nun.....

It’s been playing on and off on Movies! (a ‘sub’ channel on our local NBC affiliate). I’ve enjoyed it a few times.

Now you can watch it whenever you desire.

You're right. It was Going My Way. The Protestants also loved Bells of St. Mary too.
