I used to get swooped at by a kingbird on the way to work.

Much smaller and less taloned than a barred owl. You could put your eye out with one of those.

I had a barred owl as a pet when I was in my early teens. Towards evening he would get playful. His game was to swoop down and GENTLY graze your head with his claws. He never did any damage.

We also had magpies, crows, and for a brief time while we were nursing him back to health, a great horned owl.
