Japan exported quite a bit less than 2 million cars to the US of the record high 17.5 million vehicles sold in the US last year.
My goof ...one extra zero & comma ...Still , a big chunk of dough , no ?
There is nothing wrong with wanting and buying goods from Japan, China, or Mexico. However, it is bad when there is such a huge difference between what we import and export. We clearly need to make better deals. Also, when countries, such as China, manipulate the value of their currencies it really puts the screws to our economy and jobs. This has been happening for a long time and it has slowly taken a toll.
Chevy’s are a rare sight in Japan, as are Mercedes, Volvo, VW, Ford, Chrysler, Jeeps, Renault, Peugeot, Mini Coopers, Hyundai, Kia ... you get the picture. The Germans sell a few cars on brand prestige and quality. But for any real market share in Japan cars need to be right hand drive. Two, it would help if the cars were built there. The Japanese brands sold here are being manufactured in America with American labor, sometimes with higher US parts content than a Chevy. If Chevy made right hand drive cars in Japan to Japanese expectations of quality and features there might be some on the roads. Otherwise it’s not even Coals to Newcastle. This is one more example of Trump waving a bloody shirt in front of his yahoo fans, who eat it up because no one before has had the nerve and chutzpah to appeal so unashamedly to their ignorance.
Take away car exports from Japan to the USA and the trade deficit disappears . Fact is Americans WANT Japanese cars , and Japanese don’t want to need US cars .
$50-60 billion. I think the Japan manufactured vehicles tend to be above average in cost.
Even when the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES shared the same components and design, the Camrys were US-built and the ES was built in Japan.
I know . I live in Japan . Went to the bigcity of Kumamoto yesterday , a 90 minute drive one way , and didn’t see one American car . Did see a number of Mercedes , BMW and VW , though .
$ 50 billion - right . That is the difference .
So you want Japan to import 30 some odd billion dollars of what from the USA ?
