TOKYO Billionaire businessman Donald Trumps presidential campaign hinges on Americans who share Trumps assessment that the United States is losing all over the world.
In Mexico, were outsmarted on the border. In China, its trade and currency manipulation. In the Middle East, its the terrorist masterminds of ISIS.

Yet this very article shows that it's mostly true.
What does that say for Politifact?
Here is Trump 25 years ago saying the same pro-American things he is saying now and explaining how Japan then was doing to the USA what China is today:
Only Trump will build the wall. Only Tump will stop China. Only Trump ( And I) understand what China is doing to the USA.
President Trump will tame China! China has been eating our lunch as China makes everything.China uses unfair trade deals against the USA. Where the factories are ,the technology is and so is the power and wealth.China knows this ,S Korea, Japan all of Asia knows this. No one understands this here in America except me and Trump!
Chevy Astro minivans became very trendy in Japan about 15-20 years ago, oddly enough, people were customizing them, sort of low-riders. The boxy little Scion was largely inspired by the Chevy Astro. There was an opportunity missed.
But, how many do they expect to sell when they don’t even offer a right-hand drive model? Not to mention, most American vehicles are too wide and suffer tax penalties for it over there. American imports to Japan will likely never be huge, they’re biased toward their native manufacturers, but there’s been little effort to gain market share. They get the car nuts who absolutely have got to have a Corvette or Camaro, a few expats and little else, and appear to be just fine with that.
Another Trump Exaggeration!!!
Mostly false ??
Japan is worse than China in some ways. Buick is the top selling brand in China. It is just they are all made in China
I wouldn’t buy a GM of any kind here in the states, why would I expect anyone in Japan to buy one - especially when they aren’t designed for the tighter streets that are common there?
My current cars are both Toyotas (both made in the states).
I have considered Fords - especially when looking for a truck, which I don’t currently have; but I had some issues with my “fix or repair daily” several years ago and I’ve been hesitant to revisit that.
But I just naturally suspect, pretty much, everything Trump says without independent corroboration, as with most politicians.
It’s about the trade deficit with Japan, not literally about their cars versus our cars. I give Politifact a semantic fail.
We have all ford vans and pickups. They regularly go over 200k with no major repairs and are far more reliable than either Chevy or Dodge. I have the new turbo V6 and could not be happier- aluminum body panels and incredible accel with good gas mileage
“Its about the trade deficit with Japan, not literally about their cars versus our cars. I give Politifact a semantic fail.”
Japan is the 4th largest importer of US goods in the world .
American cars are garbage. My toyota was the best car purchase I ever made.
Because they sell more things we want and need . They don7t need Chevys - they have Toyota , Honda, Nissan , Mazda , Subaru , Mitsubishi , Suzuki ( cars in Japan ) , Daihatsu , etc...What should Japan be buying from us that they aren’t already ???
I keep telling people Japan doesn’t NEED Chevys or any other US cars . The Germans do ok over here in Japan , though . Don’t see many Brit cars either .
Lots of Buicks in China, made in China however. The Buick G8 minivan is very popular in China, not available in US. Interesting navigation, the driver wrote a Chinese symbol on the screen with his finger, took us to our site destination.
“And still the US had a 68.6 Billion dollar trade deficit with Japan in 2015”
A good chunk of that is automobiles that Americans WANT . I think Japan exported 16,000,000 cars to the US last year . Average price 25,000 dollars ? Do the math .
