Culture Rot: Donald Trump Is the Effect, Not the Cause

Culture Rot: Donald Trump Is the Effect, Not the Cause ANDREW MCCARTHY

A sick society breeds gutter politics. A few years back, I began reliving, in reverse, the most treasured part of my upbringing. On sunny summer Sundays, my son, age seven and falling in love with baseball, would curl up next to me on the couch to watch the game. The American ritual of a man passing on to his boy not just the national pastime but a cultural heritage; the odd bits of hard-knocks wisdom sprinkled around the infield-fly rule.

There was even symmetry across the decades: The Mets providing just enough drama to break your heart in the end. There was, however, a vexing intrusion on the ritual: the remote control. And not because we didn’t have a remote control for our black-and-white RCA TV set in the Bronx circa 1966; it was because we didn’t need a remote-control back then. And not because there were only six other channels, as opposed to today’s 600; it was because, as his wide-eyed seven-year-old was taking it all in, my dad wasn’t worried about having to switch off Viagra commercials between innings.

So what is the natural progression from turning the campus and pop culture over to Amerika-hating radicals, to the vigorous years-long media defense of Bill Clinton’s right to turn the White House into a cathouse, to the inability of a father to watch baseball with his young son at one o’clock on a Sunday afternoon without being ready to address erectile dysfunction? It is the cretinous Donald J. Trump campaign.

It is a political-debate dais, once the majestic lyceum of Lincoln and Douglas, on which a debauched near-septuagenarian touts his, shall we say, Trump Tower as a credential for the most important political office in the world.

More from Andrew McCarthy:

Truly. In 1966, which is not exactly millennia ago, Trump’s vulgarity would have had him banned from appearing on anyone’s black-and-white TV — even after midnight.

Today, he is the front-runner. Today, in fact, he is coveted not by the blue channels but by the news channels. He is ratings. He sells.

He is Viagra without commercials. Trump is what he is, though. There is some shock, but no surprise. What John Podhoretz nails as the “living civic nightmare” that is the GOP sweepstakes is not about a demented demagogue’s march to the 2016 erection election. It is about what has become of us. Trump is coveted not by the blue channels but by the news channels. He is ratings. He sells. He is Viagra without commercials.

Trump’s appeal is said to be his penchant for giving voice to the angry masses. But he is not a fit vessel for fighting the social suffocation brought on by political correctness. Trump says out loud things that no healthy person would even think, much less say — I mean, Ivanka is so hot that if she wasn’t my daughter, I’d probably be dating her? Whose mind works that way?

McCarthy considers his good buddy Patrick Fitzgerald to be an honorable man. Obviously, McCarthy is a poor judge of character. Perfect qualification to write at NR.

Well, Andrew, you are exactly right! (A little Ted Cruz lingo ;-) However, we gave you folks ample notice that we didn’t like the political correctness and you did nothing but throw one Tea Party Candidate after the other under the bus, and run and hide after each PC attack. So we had to wait for Samson to show up, grab the jawbone of a donkey, and start slaying Philistines! Wait until he ties those foxes tail to tail with touches, lights the torches and lets them go in your establishment fields! Go Trump!

Now that sums it all up. I’ll go for the one not picked by the establishment. And anybody but Hillary.

It is a political-debate dais, once the majestic lyceum of Lincoln and Douglas, on which a debauched near-septuagenarian touts his, shall we say, Trump Tower as a credential for the most important political office in the world.

The point went way over the author's "head". Trump, like many of us, realizes the debates are a farce that the media stages to try to prop up establishment candidates and tear down any challengers. The correct approach to a modern debate is to give it all the respect it deserves: none. The most important thing is to control the narrative after the debate. Trump controlled the narrative after the debate.

I believe Trump changed his mind in the debate about the H1B issue. Or maybe it was something else. I don't remember, I didn't watch, and I don't care. But rather than 24x7 coverage of that, the media is fixated on his anatomy. Maybe not a complete victory for Trump but not a media win for sure.

Like when you bragged about WF Buckley calling Gore Vidal a “queer,” Andrew?

Andrew, gather-up your skirts, clutch those pearls, and hit the fainting couch you old(phony)prude.

If it were not for the fact that I could not vote in my closed state primaries, I would leave the R-e party in a heartbeat.

I used to despise the R-e party.

Now I loathe them.

They don’t even bother to try and hide their Machiavellian schemes, now.

I live in what could be termed a Hillbilly area and the best way to get us to do something is to tell us to *not* do something.

Everyone is for Trump and they just dig and get that much more determined, every time the R-e hacks give us a lecture about what’s good for us.

That is more than profound.

That is the manifestation of what the late Johnny Cash sang about in his tune ‘The Farmer’s Almanac’ (1991),

“Lies have to be covered up, truth can run around naked.”

No, it’s not Andy, it is the supporters of Trump who need to answer the question posed to Joe McCarthy:

“Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

How can you support a rank con artist, who contributes to LGBT and child homosexuality; believes that Planned Parenthood does wonderful things, and is an utter vulgarian, and has not once utter the word “liberty” and “freedom” in his campaign and has advocated muzzling the Press.

THAT my FRiend, is one of the most powerful statements I've seen in a long time. I intend to steal that, but don't worry:

I only steal from the best.

Thank You!
