In 1929, German gun-maker Waffenfabrik Walther began developing a new nine-millimeter pistol for military use. The development violated the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, so Walther kept it secret. Early Walther attempts focused on scaling up its PP line of pistols to chamber the larger nine-mil round. This pistol, the Militarpistole, wasnt strong enough to withstand the pressures and recoil of the nine-by-19-millimeter round.
Walther began work on a new design in 1935 following a request from the Heereswaffenamt, the German armys weapons-technology agency. The Heereswaffenamt wanted a pistol to replace the Luger P08 one that would be cheaper and easier to manufacture and wouldnt require specialized tooling.

Was probably most popular with the allies, as well, since its the sweet little baby Hitler used to blow out his brains.
Trivia question: Name the other two P38s in WWII.

........................... PPK model, not the P38. I have Hitlers Pistol, I’m asking 100K for it. Its the one from the bunker. How many would you like?
The P38 Mustang and the P38 can opener.
No thanks. I sweat while coughing up for my 226.
Beretta M1934 was one of them.
The PPK was also Bond, James Bond’s weapon of choice.
P38 Lightnig. Twin engine, Lockheed, Kelly Johnson creation.

Take it to Pawn stars and have Ricks expert check it out. I will match their offer ;)
P-38 Lightning. Mustang is the P-51. And there’s also a P-51 can opener. Larger than the P-38 can opener.
Sorry, it was a flash posting and I did not actually look the answer up on the internet. I also have several P-51 can openers in my tool box. Years and years of C-rats and T-rats.
I was told by a vet who had one of each that the difference between the P-38 and the Luger was like the difference between a Ford and a Cadillac.
Could explain why the Nazis discontinued the Luger in 1942 & concentrated on P-38 production.

Besides the Walther, there were the Mauser & Spree Werke.
The aircraft and the crat can opener
A friend’s dad had a P-38 which I think it was later than WWII vintage. He let us shoot it a little bit. Pretty cool.
The Lightning and the can opener?
“The PPK was also Bond, James Bonds weapon of choice”
Bond’s initial weapon of choice was a .25 caliber Beretta. British gun expert Geoffrey Boothroyd wrote to Ian Fleming and said the .25 Beretta was only suited for a lady’s handbag, at which point Fleming upgraded Bond to the PPK.
Never cared much for the P-38: wide, muzzle-light, long double action pull and indifferent accuracy. Ugly as sin too.
The Luger is better balanced and elegant but far too sensitive to dirt.
The 1911A1 - balance, dependability, lethality. We won because we made better stuff.
