The movie that catapulted Prince to stardom is rolling back into U.S. theaters this weekend.

“Purple Rain,” starring the late pop star, was first released in 1984 and earned Prince an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The accompanying album also produced two no. 1 singles –“When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy–and went platinum 13 times over.

AMC, the nation’s largest theater chain, is teaming with Warner Bros. to screen “Purple Rain” in 87 AMC locations this Saturday, April 22, through Thursday, April 27. Carmike Theaters will also screen the cult favorite in 80 theaters

The body isn't even cold, and the corporate suits are already salivating...

Say what you want about Prince, good or bad, but this kind of blatant profiteering on his demise is disgusting in my opinion.

It was a sucky movie in 1984. I doubt it has gotten any better in the past 30 years.

Don’t know about where you live, but they are showing it here for free.

It was about the music then, as now.

blatant profiteering on his demise

His demise reminded people of just how good he once was. I won't see the film again, but others will want to, and they will be quite happy to pay to see it in a theater. I'm glad they will have that opportunity.

My senior year started that fall. I went a Purple Rain prom with an old girlfriend that year.

Didn’t care for him before and don’t care for him now but there seem to be a lot of Talking Heads who think he was the second coming of JFK, Elvis and the Beatles all in one.

It’s been nothing but Prince-Prince-Prince in the media for two days.

If you aren’t sick of hearing and reading about Prince by now it’s a miracle.

It was less about telling a compelling story than about serving as a showcase for Prince. In that respect it did succeed.

How come whenever some entertainer who was popular 30 years ago dies, society collapses in a sycophantic fit, moaning about how "we" have "lost a legend?" I was sitting in a public place, somebody suddenly stood up and yelled, "Oh no, we lost Prince," followed by a ripple of shock and dismay through almost everyone in the vicinity. How many of those people ever even knew who "Prince" was?

"Prince" died alone.

Didn’t have a thought about him for the past 20 years. Sorry he passed, but when I checked my bank account I had less money in it.

Huh.

OK.

Personally, I was hoping this would happen.

And with more movies more often. Movies are made to be seen on big screens in theaters.

I wonder what they use to show the movie? Film? If so boy did they run off new copies fast. I don’t think they would have had show worthy old copies lying around.

I would like to see the Know-Nothings get as upset over the death of every American serviceman
as they do over each freaky, unhinged entertainer who drugs him/herself to death.
