Greetings to all. It is a cool day here without sunshine. I had to drag out the sweater and am huddled up with the heated rice sock.

The endive, spinach, and lettuce are beginning to be recognizable. The potatoes are growing like gangbusters. We had a bit of rain earlier today. Still not sure what else I will be planting in my remaining 30 sq feet of the main beds off the back patio.

Hope everyone is doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Endive— I believe escarole is a type of endive. My grandma made an awesome escarole dish— I tried growing it here but not too successful.

Looks like more rain headed for Central Missouri this evening. Overall, we need it, but I'd rather it held off until Monday so I can get some stuff done outdoors over the weekend. I'm taking #1 Marine Daughter Leah's quarter horse to the trainer tomorrow morning. He'll be there for at least a month. A lady is supposed to come out Sunday to look at my TWH mare for her daughter to use as a 4H horse. Another welfare eater leaving the property would make me happy.

Chervil in the cold frame is going absolutely nuts. We're eating salad every day and can't keep up with it.

The asparagus is also doing well. This was picked Wednesday evening.

One of my most precious childhood memories was staying w/ my
aunt....she would be preparing dinner then would instruct me to go out by
the backyard fence (where she had some sown seeds).... and pick a bowl
full of young lettuce leaves for the evening salad. Talk about delicious.

Whew! The only thing left is to mulch the second row of cukes and put four eggplant seedlings into the ground.
It has taken me two weeks from tilling to finish.

We had vegan wilted spinach salad tonight, with the spinach and scallions from the garden. So good! I’m going to be bummed when I have to buy greens from the store again : ( We put in two dwarf Apple trees, six blueberries, and 12 floricane raspberries. Raspberry question: I pruned them back as instructed by the nursery and cut off canes with green shoots. I stuck the green shoots in water. Will I be able to root them, or am I wasting water and time? Thanks for any answers and opinions!

Here in Northeastern Kansas, I actually had some carrots that wintered over. They were somewhat tasteless but would do in a pinch. My garlic is doing great. I had a friend do my heirloom tomato starts this year (I was out of town for two weeks and couldn’t do my own). I will pick them up and plant them this weekend. My strawberries are blossoming and my Black and Raspberries are looking good even though I had to transplant them to make room for a sewer project.

I forgot to post about my other project this year: I’m planting a garden for the nuns across the street! They are so sweet. We tilled them up a spot, installed deer fencing, and planted the cold tolerant seedlings and seeds. They are so excited! They are mostly Spanish and there is a bit of a language barrier issue; however, everybody understands fresh veggies.

Everything is doing well. Having a great crop of lettuce. Pansies blooming profusely and starting to cut roses. The lavender is producing lots of flowers. As I’m having success with growing plants which need full sun for at least 6 hours, I going to try tomatoes! I miss my fresh home grown tomatoes and cucumbers!

Thanks again for doing the thread and pings GE. The weather here on very north coast of Calif is less than ideal for this old man plus a couple of doctors are trying to get my pulse up and keep my BP down so I’m not so lethargic. Lady Bender has been doing all the spading plus tending her greenhouse seedlings, plus cooking and cleaning plus all she does for our Church etc.. We got all the potatoes planted and a few are up plus the volunteers which we will dig in a month or less. The Rhododendrons are in full bloom around our Seaport Village just in time for the annual Rhododendron Parade tomorrow. I’ll see what I have for a couple of photos to post...

My latest toy is a real weather station. I bought an Accu-rite for about $140.00???? can't remember. It was heck getting it up, but it is now firmly attached to the trellis. On a ten foot tall aluminum pole. I love the rain feature and the wind and wind speed. I haven't gotten used to the dew point yet. It seems to take a lot of rain to get it to start registering. The deck is plenty wet when the thing reads .01. But then it took a lot of rain to make something in the glass gauge too.

I too put on the hooded sweatshirt with extra hat and tried to mow the lawn. Just plugged up the bagger tube again.

The earth boxes have snow peas, Swiss chard and some beets showing.

My peas are up and doing well - really starting to climb. I am swamped ... my two new raised beds got constructed Monday night & now I have to haul the dirt to fill them from the pile in the back field. Each will take 45 5-gallon buckets. I have Leaf Gro (7 bags each) to add so that saves hauling a few buckets. I’ve already bought 16 plants for the garden - need at least one of the new beds (plus the two old ones) to plant them all so that’s “motivation” to get one of the new beds completed.

I just got off the mower after almost 3 hours of mowing fields. The good news about that is I’m using a new zero-turn mower that was delivered yesterday. It is FAST compared to my 10 year old lawn tractor. I’ve got lots of catch-up mowing to do since the belt broke on the old mower & that didn’t get fixed for a couple of days plus we’ve had rain. One thing is for certain - I need to practice my driving skills on the new mower & will be using the old one for a while to trim close around the redbuds & rose bushes. Going around big trees I can manage, but the small stuff would get run over for sure at this point - there’s a definite learning curve. :-)
