France rejects Corsica's demands over its language

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has rejected nationalist demands to give the Corsican language a "co-official" status alongside French, insisting that it was a "red line" issue.

On a visit to the Mediterranean island on Monday Valls refused to bow to the demands made by nationalists, who recently won a historic and shock win in Corsica's regional elections.

"The Republic has only one official language, French, because it is used by everyone," Valls said during a speech to the Corsican Assembly.

"We will not go back on that principal," he said.

The French Prime Minister also rejected nationalist demands for an amnesty for "political prisoners" and for the creation of a favorable "resident" status for locals on the island.

Corsica’s increasingly powerful nationalist and independence movements are opposed to France’s cultural and political dominance over the island, which it annexed in 1768.

While nationalists seek to assert Corsican culture and language a smaller and more radical separatist group want outright independence from Paris and have been willing to fight for it.

In May this year a separatist group in Corsica said it would end "military operations", two years after the main militant movement on the French island laid down its arms.

There have been thousands of attacks in a 40-year struggle during which nine police officers have been killed.
The separatist groups have also been blamed for armed robberies and extortion through so-called revolutionary taxes.
Nowadays, the island of around 300,000 people is a popular tourist destination, famed for its spectacular beauty and climate.
Monday's visit by Valls was his first to Corsica since becoming Prime Minister, and the first by a high-ranking official since nationalists led by Jean-Guy Talamoni and Gilles Simeoni swept to power on the island in December’s regional elections.

Despite his intransigence on key nationalist demands, Valls announced some conciliatory measures, including a new teaching qualification for giving lessons in ‘Corsican language and culture’ and a new Corsican "Territorial Chamber".

He also reiterated his aim to introduce bilingual streams in Corsican schools.

France for all it's talk tsk-tsking the US about "racial inequality" has one of the most discriminatory systems against minorities in the world: the Breton, Alsace, Corscian etc. languages are banned outright and crushed. At the same time, all the people I know who have lived there and outside (even Frenchies) tell me that the racism and ostracism practiced in France is worse than anywhere in the world.

Then why it’s massive muslim population and allowing them to enforce their own system of law on their ghettos?

Doesn’t compute.

These days everyone is calling themselves a “race” for some perk or other. How long before one calls another a “designer dog” ?

The Muslim issue could be solved very simply by the French Nationals establishing a presence in the ghetto saying “you can live by our laws or get the hell out”

I don’t understand your sentence: “then why it’s” — if you mean why does FRance allow the ghettos to survive is that they prefer to keep them separate. But that policy has been a failure.

Do the no-go areas of French cities speak French? I don’t think so.

Very interesting. I had not previously been aware that Corsican separatism was a thing. What is their language, a Frenchified form of Italian, or an Italianate form of French?

That’s what it comes down to now. There will eventually be a Front National government ruling.

The hypocrisy of those that brought them in is the reason for it, or one of them. They wanted always someone else to integrate with them and were happy to point the finger when it didn’t happen, when regular French people recoiled from foreigners they didn’t invite into their home country. French limousine liberals bear much of the blame.

"The Republic has only one official language, French, because it is used by everyone"

Should we tell him or just let him be...?

(Within a few decades, the French language will have survived only in its Corsican, Québécois, and Haïtien versions. In mainland France, of course, it will have been replaced by Arabic.)

Corsican is not a dialect of French -- it is related to other Italic dialects like Sardinian

Also, mainland France won't have it replaced with Arabic -- many of the French Moslems are Berber and speak Berber; the others speak Maghrebin Arabic which is quite different from Standard Arabic. Also, linguistically, many Moslems are purely French speaking.
