The latest Black Hat security conference is underway in Las Vegas. (AP)"
LAS VEGAS -- Apple (AAPL) iPhones are drubbing their Android counterparts on the mobile security front, say Atredis Partners founders Shawn Moyer and Josh Thomas. But Apple's dominance isn't necessarily tied to a more potent security posture.
"Not that many (Android users) are on the newest release of the OS (operating system)," Thomas said. "It's like Windows 95 out in the wild. ... People are saying Apple is winning security. This is one reason why."
The Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant is better at pushing updates, Thomas and Moyer told a several-hundred-thick crowd Wednesday at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. Apple's users, too, are better trained to accept those updates.
Android's security posture depends on "obsolescence," Thomas said. The lion's share of iPhones are operating on the newest iOS, Apple's proprietary operating system, with a smaller group only lagging by a generation. Users of Android, a much-used open-source operating system developed by Alphabet (GOOGL) unit Google, are left more vulnerable.

My iPhone is currently updating to 9.3.3. My droid is still stuck on 5.1
I just checked on this iPad. It’s on iOS 9.3.2, and 9.3.4 is available. I’m now downloading it.
I have an iPhone six that ghost types all over the place. It will change apps dial calls all sorts of crazy stuff. Worst phone I’ve had ever.
I researched and found its common problem. And I don’t have time to get to the Apple Store. Somehow I’m surviving!
Yikes! You are correct! Downloaded and installed 9.3.4
I am obsessive/compulsive about updates!
Love Blackhat ..... great information but scary stuff.
Pretty simple. Android orphans devices. A 3 or 4 year iPhone (if such exists among the zombies) will likely accept and run a “latest update” os/security patches. It may be a bit sluggish by comparison, but it would most likely run.
Android, and more to the point the phone manufacturers, appear to tie the update capability to latest model and service provider, and the service providers update or end of life schedules. Anyone walking around with a 3 year android smartphone on a large provider contract is fighting a deluge of spam to keep his current plan and not upgrade.
Buy an android tablet not associated with a phone plan, and it will likely be un-upgradeable in a year.
eyephon: one os to find them all and in backward-compatability bind them.
