Heroin deaths in Milwaukee County jump by 72% (Feb. 18, 2015)

Heroin-related deaths in Milwaukee County skyrocketed by 72% last year compared with 2013, according to data released Wednesday by the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office.

In 2014, 119 people died from heroin-related overdoses, and for the second year in a row in Milwaukee County, heroin-related deaths outpaced motor vehicle deaths, of which 74 occurred.

Heroin-related deaths also account for nearly half the 249 drug-related deaths investigated by the medical examiner's office. Several drug-related deaths from 2014 remain under investigation, but heroin has been ruled out as a contributing factor.

It's the highest number of drug-related deaths ever recorded by the agency. Fatal heroin-related overdoses have been steadily increasing in Milwaukee County in the last several years, reaching 45 in 2011, 53 in 2012 and 69 in 2013. Statewide, the number of heroin overdose deaths has risen just as dramatically, with well over 200 in 2013.

The trend in Wisconsin matches national data, which showed an increase in opioid deaths from 2012 to 2013 and a massive spike — 39% — in heroin deaths from 2012 to 2013, the latest year for which federal data is available.

Related old news: Police-FBI task force executes Milwaukee gang crackdown

The MPD-FBI Gang Task Force fanned out across Milwaukee's north side just after dawn Tuesday, executing eight search warrants and targeting more than a dozen suspected gang members for arrest.

By late Tuesday afternoon, authorities had arrested 13 men — four on federal charges and nine on state charges — recovered 10 guns and seized an undisclosed "felony quantity" of narcotics, along with $21,000 worth of marijuana found in one house.

The task force focused on members of ATK, short for Atkinson Ave., and HPT, which investigators say stands for Hustlers, Pimps and Thugs, although others have suggested it simply is short for Hampton Ave.

The two street gangs have operated not only in Police District 5, but across Milwaukee's north side for the past two to three years.

Nearly one year ago, authorities focused on a street gang called 29 Taliban and its affiliated groups, the 29 Hard-Hitters and 29 Money-Getters. The moniker came from their base, N. 29th St. between W. Center St. and W. Auer St.

It’s going on pretty much everywhere. Folks got their opioid/benzo pills taken away by doctors, or priced out of their range, and the cartels saw a business opportunity. Pills are actually more expensive on the street, but you know what you are getting. Heroin, not so much I guess.

And Indiana.

And we even provide the needles in some counties.

And in a couple weeks, I’ll be asking my son and nephew to get in the water of a large stream to remove large logjams.

We have to keep sharps disposal boxes on the job because last year they found about a dozen needles floating in the debris doing this job.

This is what happens when you start a pill epidemic and take away the pills. Is it a coincidence that the country is flooded with heroin at the same time? I don’t think so.

I live in Suffolk County Long Island.... most per capita heroin OD deaths per capita in the US...

My daughter was almost a victim of this drug... it is cheap and found everywhere....

Most comes from Mexico.... we can stop it...but open borders is more important to our elitist political overlords

Don’t know if there’s any connection, but that’s about the percentage margin by which Ryan won last Tuesday I think.

“Self inflicted. Self correcting.”

Interesting perspective.

It seems axiomatic if you think about it.
