Well, Hispanic is not a race, actually. Not even truly an ethnicity. More of a culture. But “white Hispanic” woukd be a reasonable description!
The only actual races are Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid. But we are branded if we use that N one. And thought heartless and insensitive if we use the M one. So Maybe the color stuff is best.

Somehow yellow Americans is an oxymoron to me. Understand White, Black, Red AMERICANS, but (honestly) Yellow Americans. Perhaps being a bit to extreme in identifying the Asian/Oriental people. Frankly, I haven’t a clue as to what PC word to use for them and this is not meant as disrespect to any. So please ‘cuse any ‘gaffe’
I think you’re on to something, but I’m not sure using color is the way to go.
If only we could call everyone, “American” first.
Then maybe there would be an easy way for people to delineate themselves if they want. But what would it be? If you did American Black and American White, how then would you describe Hispanics and Asian ancestry? That’s the problem, as you stated, the descriptions are not in sync with each other.
Someone more brilliant than me will develop the right verbiage.

I am a CAUCASIAN, mixed with Cherokee on both sides of my
family, Huguenots going way back (Maupins who came to
America & fought in the Revolutionary War & were paid for
it in land grants.) - NEGROES should be proud of their
heritabe as well and of their contributions to this country.
I guess us “whiteys” have been called “Caucers” by someone
at some time. I also think the use of the word “nigg*rs”
was most often a mispronunciation by “whites”.
I’m 70 and a Southerner. I was NOT raised prejudiced. My
father and his siblings’ playmates were a family of NEGRO
children who were their NEIGHBORS in the country. Their
father supervised the kids’ horseback riding on his farm.
My dad was a combat veteran of WWII. He NEVER insulted
NEGROES or GAYS or ANYBODY. We worked, tried to obey the
law, and minded our own business.
I love this angle. The United States of America presents a historic opportunity for black people and white people and all points in between to have a *good thing* together because we believe the idea that God loves us all equally. I hope Trump includes this message in every speech he makes going forward.
My forebears came here from Scotland and Ireland via Philadelphia, then westward in short order thru the Gap, to TN, then up to KY, and finally to far southern Illinois.
So we both have our respective heritage, but aside from our ancestral roots, I'd wager that you'd join me in declaring myself - proudly - American !
No hyphens necessary .. you are or you're not.

Yes, I’m extremely suspicious that is the case. Illiterates who couldn’t say “Negro” well. Happens all the time with speech. Then turned into its own “word” that became more insulting than the word it was clearly based on.
Fine, except we are talking about races, and not nationalities.
Which is part of why calling a RACE “African-AMERICAN” is so incredibly stupid.
These PC idiots from America have indeed treated black people abroad as if they were “AA”. Reporter to an Italian black guy - “how do you feel being the first A-A to complete this feat?” Italian - completely flummoxed. True story.

The people I have known who pronounced that word
incorrectly, I know they harbored no hatred of ANYONE.
I know there have been some KKK sorts who knew exactly
what they were doing; but some of them also were just
not well educated. - One just has to get up and stand
straight up and ignore ignorance and MOVE ON in the
world! - I resent being called “spook”, too; but I don’t
get livid about it. I know pretty much what I am; but
really, genealogy is referred to as “useless” in the Bible;
and it probably is for the most part.
