On the map, What is a “speed trap” and a “DRS detection zone”?

the trap is the fastest spot on the track and has a RADAR unit checking for top end speed

the DRS zones are Drag Reduction Zones where the rear wing opens up on a car one second or less behind the car in front of it to assist in passing, less down force = less drag = quick burst of speed for overtaking

My last F1 experience was the anemic 1.5 litre non-turbo cars of the early ‘60s. Phil Hill, Ritchie Ginther, Graham Hill, Von Tripps, the Rodriguez brothers, Moss, et al.

If it helps, ‘67 introduced 3 liter engines with the same lack of downforce and insane HP. Then came wings and much more, including, alas, advertisements stuck on every part of the car.

Also, the Mexican Grand Prix (after Japan and U.S.) is at the track named for those Rodriguez brothers.

It seems to be the track records are mostly from around ten years ago. (This and other tracks, that is)

that’s what i grew up on here at the Glen...

yeah and there are prolly several factors in play

sometimes it’s an added kink to slow the cars down to non-turbo cars lighting up faster without the turbo-lag etc

it is something i’d like to know more about why myself
