Here’s an update on her project:
It’s an AP or Honors class and apparently some in her group did not do their share of the load.
So she didn’t pass it in on time, and now gets 10% grade reduction.
She’s mad, did most if not all of the work, and couldn’t even get one or two others to complete their small part.
I laughed and reminded her of the Plymouth Pilgrims story and their ‘everyone gets a fair share’ failed society.
Realization struck her like lightening.
She said she’s going to tell her teacher this project has made her want to be a capitalist.

LOL!* My use of the scare quotes refers to the fact that the meaning of the word was changed - essentially inverted - in the 1920s (source: Safire’s New Political Dictionary)My experience with a socialist-minded HS teacher was back in the middle of the Eisenhower Administration. For homework one day, the teacher asked the class to answer the question,
“Do we have to do what society says?” I decided that the answer was, “No,” and in my turn I said so. He replied that “We like to say ‘society’ when we mean government.”
That was the end of the verbal exchange, but inside I thought that that was a very unfair thing to do. So I was unconvinced, but I had no idea how to reply.
That is why I like to refer to the Common Sense quote I cited earlier. I used to stop the quote at “government is . . . but a necessary evil,” because by then it had made the point about the difference between “society” and “government.”
But it hit me recently that, if you start from the premise that “If it bleeds, it leads” - that journalism is about bad news - the passage actually explains why journalists are “liberals.” Bad news suggests a flaw or failing or limitation of society, “Liberals*” promote ever more government to ameliorate these (real or, mostly, imaginary) evils.
Journalists is claim that their negativity is "objective.” “Negativity is objectivity” only to the cynic. Journalists are cynical about society. “Liberalism” is cynicism about society, combined with naivete about government.
