An Exoplanet With Huge Rings Intrigues
universetoday.com ^ | 10/13/2016 | Matt Williams

How such a ring system could have come about is a mystery, as retrograde ring systems are quite uncommon. But Reider and Kenworth have stated that they think it might be the result of a catastrophic event – such as a massive collision – that caused the rings (or the planet) to change the direction of their rotation.

Their results also indicated that a retrograde ring system would allow for eclipses, like the one that was observed in 2007. While there was some chance of these being caused by another object, the results suggested otherwise. “The chance of that is minimal,” said Rieder. “Also, the velocity measured with previous observations may not be right, but that would be very strange, because those measurements are very accurate.”

In the future, Reider and Kenswoth hope to investigate the mysteries of this ring formation more closely. This will include how it could have formed in the first place, and how it has evolved over time. Their study has ben accepted for publication in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics and be viewed online at arXiv.

that would be awesome - we have such a boring sky

I mean unless you go far far away from the city where there are not lights - which is WORTH DOING at least once in your lifetime

The milky way actually looks like the photos you see

Photos of the Milky Way?

By what means and by whom were these photographs taken?

Or perhaps you meant photos of the Andromeda galaxy or other spiral galaxies some distance from our own?

"...Photos of the Milky Way? By what means and by whom were these photographs taken?..."

We are orbiting a star out on one of the Milky Way's "spiral arms". When you have a dark enough sky, and if you look towards the "galactic center" you will see a portion of the galaxy we inhabit. Such pictures are common, they are taken from Earth, and they can be spectacular.

Boring skies are good.

Interesting skies are usually the result of events that would be very bad for life regards of where it lives.

My initial reading of the statement I commented on was a photo from outside the galaxy...not from Earth. I later realized my...error in perspective.
