Hyderabad: This Ricky Bahl Duped Women After Marriage, Had 350 Girlfriends

The police in Hyderabad arrested a conman who would dupe women after marrying them.

A smooth talker, K. Venkat Ratna Reddy had several women falling for him. Like Ranveer Singh's character in the movie 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl', Reddy promised marriage to women, and in this case married them too, and then duped them.

Unlike the character in the movie, Reddy's story ultimately ended in the jail (at least for now).

THE ARREST

The Central Crime Station (CCS) unit of the Hyderabad Police arrested him for duping women in the name of marriage. He would approach women through a popular matrimonial site.

Based on the complaint of a US-based family, the police arrested him from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. Reddy is wanted in nine cases of fraud in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

MODUS OPERANDI

Reddy had obtained a passport and a business visa to travel from Visakhapatnam to the US. After reaching the US, a married Reddy put up his profile on a matrimonial site and started approaching prospective brides. \

He finally zeroed in on a girl from an NRI family and married her. Within 20 days of their marriage, Reddy had duped them of US$30,000 (Rs 20 lakh approximately).

Earlier this month, the family approached the CCS police and lodged a complaint of cheating against Reddy. The police tracked him through electronic surveillance and arrested him from his residence.

350 GIRLFRIENDS

On investigation, police found that Reddy was also trying to dupe a Canadian woman in a similar fashion and was planning to leave India soon.

Reddy, a non-graduate, was fluent in English and had excellent communication skills. According to the police, his profile on a social networking site had 350 'girlfriends'. This number can give even Singh's character in the movie a run for money.

PROBE CONTINUES

Speaking to India Today, ACP, Cyber Crime, Raghuveer said, "We are writing to the Visakhapatanam police on how an offender wanted in several crimes secured a passport. We are also writing to the matrimonial site to provide more information on his profile besides telling them to remove it from the site."

The police are also trying to contact the Canadian national whom Reddy had planned to marry, Raghuveer said.

Reddy was arrested in 2012 by the police after he posed an Indian Revenue Service officer and demanded money from Telugu cine producers C Kalyan and Ramesh Babu. Reddy has been remanded in judicial custody. The CCS police is trying to seek his remand to further investigate into the cases he has been involved in.
